R5, a new Android DAP by Hiby

Nov 23, 2019 at 7:21 PM Post #1,351 of 4,427
With system wide mseb I can try and ditch Hiby app with associated gapless playback issues. However I don’t want to use Google Play to download another music app. Should I use apk pure? I would really appreciate some help here. Also, it seems people like Poweramp and Neutron. I would appreciate some feedback here also. Thanks
Yes you can use apkpure, which you can even get on a website instead of any app. However note that bluetooth earphones are not yet supported, as mentioned above.

Do you know if it is technically possible to add system wide MSEB to Bluetooth output via a future OTA update?
(Hoping for a yes)

I've found that consistently asking about it eventually leads to its implementation
:-)

Every feature so far has been. Really can't complain. It may take awhile, but everything is here. System wide mseb, low oi, smaller form factor, LTE coming in a new device.
Of course do your own part too, gotta show somewhat it's possible

Lots of cheap phones with LTE access for example so it's a matter of shielding not total cost. System wide mseb, there's viper4android, so you know it's possible, low oi.. No brainer, smaller form factor fiio m11.

So if I was you, I'd be saying hey, look into doing something like the es100 but apply eq to output? Possible?

I'd be more interested in knowing if it applies to Bluetooth input? Does it work like a es100 when in Bluetooth receiver where the eq you apply works for the Bluetooth receiver??

Interceptor 69,

When orbi has r5 on 2.4Ghz band it works great but when it hands it off to 5Ghz (which is what orbi does) although R5 says connected, nothing online works. You can see which band R5 is on if you tap on your connected network on R5 Wi-Fi settings. If you can check this let me know what you find. Thanks.

I just checked and it works fine on 5G -on Tidal but when trying Qobuz I have to log out then back into the site but I don't think that has anything to do with Orbi. I'm having so much trouble with Qobuz I'm probably going to stick with Tidal.

Sorry to be dunderheaded about this but how would I install another music app on R5? For instance, could I download an app on my laptop and copy it to R5? With the proviso that I wish to avoid linking with google play. Thanks

You can use the browser built into your R5 to go online and go to apkpure.com , find the music app you want, download the "apk" directly to your R5 and run it directly to install it. A message would pop up saying that the browser is not (yet) authorized to run programs, tap "settings", turn on the slider there for allowing it to run program, go back, and you should see the screen asking you if you would like to install the program. Just tap yes to that.

Hope that helps!

Becoming a little disappointed with Hiby support. They sent me a new version of old firmware file 1.13 which failed in the same way as the original. Joe Bloggs -you said it would not work--how come they don't know that.
Also even worse news. I set up a brand new google nest wifi which did the same thing as the orbi---failed when either handed off to 5Ghz from 2.4 Ghz or put on 5Ghz directly. Again failure may be less than a minute but a couple of times it went quite a bit longer. If it stayed on 2.4 Ghz-it was OK. So I believe that mesh networks with one SSID will not work properly with the R5 due to a problem in the R5 wifi implementation. I also tested with an old Netgear WNDR4000 router, which has 2 SSIDs and it worked properly on 2.4 and 5Ghz. By the way failures occurred within 1-7 feet of the mesh routers and at greater distances as well. All my other devices worked fine with all three units tested-only the R5 failed. And I can't see if it was caused during firmware updates because Hiby sent me files that will not downgrade.

Hi slammyhotep,
Sorry, the average customer service person isn't as technically minded as you or I. They just thought the update package might have been corrupted. I have alerted them to the issue and we'll have to see if a proper downgrade package can be made or if that's the way to troubleshoot this at all. Give us a day or two. I don't think they have a 5GHz hive WiFi network within a thousand miles of their office so this might be a tough one. Or they might be using one right at their office :hmm:

I tried to attach a photo of the screen but for some reason it didn't load. I will try again.

Interceptor69- Thanks for looking. That is what I see too. But eventually it will disconnect-the longest use before disconnection was about 50+ minutes. However when it is 2.4ghz no issue. But if it goes back to 5ghz it will cut off online activity of browsing and streaming again usually in about 30 seconds to a minute. Sometimes a few minutes and as I said before sometimes closer to an hour. And again with mesh networks with single SSID for both bands.

Joe Bloggs- thank you for continuing to follow up. Also remember it is fine on traditional routers with 2 ssids. I had no problem with that test. Both mesh networks that use single SSID caused it. Besides the problem itself, I still have a bit of time in my return window. So I hope they figure something out so I don’t have to return it.

Thanks so far to all of you who are trying to help.
