I was listening with the old 400i which sounds a little more like a closed headphone, lemme try the newer 400i for you since that's the one you'd receive if you ordered one.

Give me a track to compare?

Mine actually says Made in Austria on both sides.  I've compared pictures of the cable and everything else with pictures from the internet and everything looks the same.  Just the paint thing....

Yes, I have a SN sticker on the left side on the inside.

If your were made in Austria, then they are old. AKG has been making Q701 in China for quite a few years

400i has more present/forward vocals. Q701 has more separation making for more enjoyable violin. I think I slightly prefer the acoustic guitar on the 400i but it's close. There's a little more pep and snap to the acoustic guitar on the 400i but on the Q701 the guitar is more forward. The Q701 sounds slightly more flat and slightly more distant and the 400i sounds closer and more musical to my ear. The guitar feels more alive.

The 400i has more forward vocals and a more "full" sound overall, the Q701 has very slightly more forward guitar and string and sounds airier / has a larger space. This is probably the biggest difference, the sense of space and separation is greater on the Q701 but I think a smaller space is a common attribute to planars. Honestly the two headphones are more similar than they are different, though. Which is pretty impressive for the Q701 which I got at almost 1/3 of the price.

Thank you so much for your personal impressions from my own personal library of music. I think the technical advantages of the he400 has allowed it to exceed in speed and intimacy compared to the q701. I compared the graphs of the he500 so if a good amount of people give that alternative a thumbs up, I'll be saving up for that.

Edit: I've gone to a headphone shop and though I can hear more detail compared to the Q701's, I don't think I can switch over to planars. I still prefer the Q's and my evident upgrade will eventually be the HD800.

Why replace the headband? If it is still in good condition just chop the bumps off and stick a piece of adhesive backed felt over where the bumps have been cut off. Cutting the bumps off with a razor knife is actually very very easy.

Oh just so it looks a little nicer I guess.
I've already cut some of the bumps off. Guess I could check out some felt or something before I go thru the trouble. I'd just like to have a more "finished" look to them.

If i cared more, i could have made it look a bit better and more seamless, but it works, and looks decent.
