I always thought the lime green looked horrible, but your photo makes it look very appealing.
 
I don't usually like all black electronics because I think it's a bit played out (like grey electronics in the 90s) but I think the Q701 looks really nice in all black with the green cable.
 
Kind of wishing I had lime green ones now though!

The green is actually a little richer in real life vs pic. If you have the green cable, that green is a much more pale green.

Plus as a 5 year season ticket holder I felt obligated to get matching team color headphones.

I'm really liking the Q701, I'll let it run for even longer before getting into it critically.

  Well, I was able to get a good deal on a FiiO E17 so I have gone that route instead. I just hope I am not disappointed.

 


I used to have an E17.
I often used it with my Q701.
You won't be disappointed!
It has more than enough power for the E17.

My Matrix M Stage headphone amp is a better sounding amp, the difference is real, but it is NOT huge.
OTOH, I am are comparing a $150 amp/DAC to a $275 amp.

That's reassuring. I'm guilty of being a perfectionist when it comes to much in life and I always want to stretch my dollar to the max and because of that, I want to see clearly good results in whatever I'm after. I owned an Objective 2 amp and a HiFimeDIY Sabre DAC for use with a SRH940 and that amp did very little to improve the sound but the DAC helped immensely by widening the soundstaging and boosting clarity and impact. Fast forward to today when I now have the Q 701 and I notice that even the smallest changes in sources make a larger difference with the Q 701's sound quality. For example, it sounds like garbage plugged into my tablet but plugged into my iPhone, there is a noticeably big change in clarity and impact. I never have experienced a headphone this revealing or sensitive to sources as the Q 701 and it makes me quite satisfied knowing my headphone is peering into my source and not acting like a pair of rose-colored glasses that only gives me a hallow, blurred representation of my music. If the FiiO E17 makes a big difference as a source compared to my iPhone, I'll be happy. If it is also even more beneficial by properly amping the Q701, I'll be fully satisfied.

I'd be interested to see how it does against an iPhone headphone jack.

I don't think you can take digital direct from an iPhone to an E17 though.
You know Apple.....gotta be different and gotta be difficult.

I indeed had to cover it, comfort wise it was fine, but the earcups were drooping too low.

is the Q701 somewhere between the warmer K702.65AE and the colder DT880.600ohm?
 
I found the K702.65AE a little too warm,
and the DT880.600ohm a little too bright,
 
I honestly love both of them, but still trying to find something in between the 2.
will Q701 satisfy my expectations?  or should I go for the even colder K702 and do the bass port mod on it?

I have the DT800/600 and the Q701......and I'm withholding my opinion, except to say, try them both out yourself!

I thought the DT880 250ohm were top  notch when I first got them (my first venture into Head-Fi). After hearing some planar magnetics and then the Q701 I can say that the Q701 is more favorable for my taste. The DT880 for some reason felt congested (mind you it was properly amped) in soundstage and depth. The treble also felt hotter in tracks vs the Q701. As far as instrument sound realism I feel the DT880 is better, however my Q701 hasn't been fully burned in. Nothing beats the HE4 for instrument realism though, the balance armature-like micro detail of the treble along with the speed and attack makes the HE4 very tough to beat.

According to my research, the Q701's bass is about 3db less than my K702.65AE.
and I am pretty sure that is a fact and a reference point when comparing the two.
 
I guess what I am really asking is that does the bass differences indirectly make the Q701 more bright.
Making it sits between the K702.65AE and the DT880.600ohm in terms of brightness.
