PX100-II Review | Discussion Thread

Listening for my grill modded porta pros, I must say I didn't really remember how great they sound. With stock pads btw. Sub bass is not as emphasized as on px100ii. Higher treble is more clear on portapros. Mids are maybe a bit more forward on portas aswell. Soundstage and separation is better on porta pros. Still, they have many similarities and it's hard to decide which one to prefer. In short, px100ii is a bit more laid back but both are very gentle on ears. But portas are cheaper and simple grill/kramer mod makes them realllly shine, I would say they are real value even compared to px100.

Testing HD424 pads on px100, sound is quite great. Not so muddy anymore as bass tames a bit but is still present enough. Treble brightens a bit aswell, but I think not too much. Soundstage is better and overall sound is more airy. Fit is good, a bit loose tho. Comfort is suberb.

Try removing the foam from the backside of the PX100. Makes them sound a bit wider.

My quick and dirty DIY foam pads on px100ii. Made them with just scissors from some regular packaging foam/cushion. Goal was to reduce tiny bit of bass so clarity and seperation in general would improve, and they actually do that. Bass is still very powerful but it's very slightly reduced so it won't be as boomy and treble is now more easily heard and separation is better. Comfort is maybe same as stock pads.. Made them same size as stock pads so they work well on portable use, can be folded normally.

Did you try stretching the headband?
I found the stock clamp force and the bass too powerful and I carefully stretched out the headband using the thumbs around, and left them overnight to stretch on a shelf speaker and now both the comfort and the bass are very good. Bass is a bit less than stock, better transparency and stage.

I haven't streched headband but that seems a good mod. I'm very happy with sound my mod pads give so I won't do streching right now. These are seriously enjoyable little phones. Signature is delicious!

Porta's def are brighter than the Px, but the treble can sound a bit artificial at times. The treble on Px is just a bit more accurate, especially as they have a smoother sound all over.

Both good value sets for the money.

The Px sound awesome with movies, especially action.

Although the Koss pair are slightly brighter when compared to the Px, I feel the Px still has a lot of detail up top... even though MUCH smoother. I love the Portas, but i prefer the Px as they have a very natural presentation and everything just 'gels' so well. i was listening to some Queen with the Px and found the bass wonderful and musical, and harmonies and instruments complimented each other with ease. On the Porta you are right, there is better separation but can be a bit disjointed at times imo

My pleather pad mod.

Sound with one word: LUSH. Super lush, so smooth and bass is very powerful but not awfully muddy, not really bad at all. Soundstage is wide! Lush and wide sound, quite interesting and fun sound!

Maybe some vent holes on cardboard would be ideal, little less bass wouldn't hurt. Pads are from Creative Fatal1ty headset and mounting parts are made of cardboard.

Still like my diy foam pads more than pleather pads, they were too smooth and veiled. Now two holes have been made to foam pads, don't affect comfort any way. Did also recabling with some pretty basic 3,5mm line cable, obiviously originally for microphone applications because it has red mic plug. Not for any sound benefits tho, more like overall feeling as I thought original cable felt somewhat flimsy, now phones feel more "pro"

. I also removed half of the backing foams of drivers, and that's because I wanted to hide soldering points but still have very slight benefit of more open sound. I streched headband quite a bit for better comfort, clarity and for less bass. Quite many mods here, some of them maybe just for the sake of modding, but anyway modding is fun and sound is great.

EDIT: cable might have benefits after all compared to stock cable because it has shield ground. I didn't really pay attention yesterday when I listened with my desktop amp, but sound was very clean and I think backround was silent. With stock cable there was some slight low hum/noise with my desktop amp. If that's the case, then there could be sonical improvements aswell, but as I said, I didn't make recabling with that in mind. Anyway I'm away for a week from my desktop system so I can't confirm my observations right now. Interesting note, on stock cable there is actually two ground wires, so it makes total of four wires.

hi guys, just a quick question, is the px200 largely different in terms of sq from px100? Just asking since it's on sale on an online shop here so can't really audition it.

I don't have experience of px200 but what I've read, I believe px200 is inferior to px100 as many times closed vs open designs are. Closed back designs tend to have worse imaging and soundstage on lower price range than open back designs. So it's probably matter of listening environments, but if isolation is not required, then px100 is the choice. I've been recently rediscovering px100 ii after my mods, they really sound so very good.

i'm thinking of using the px200 during commutes as the px100's isolation really isn't ideal for commutes. especially for long bus/train rides, where the person beside me usually gives me an odd look whenever i try to up the volume to make up for the lack of isolation.

It may seem as if the PX100 is being discontinued with no open ear-pad successor.

"The range succeeds the popular PX 100, PX 200 and HD 200 series models." Third post: http://www.head-fi.org/t/818931/sennheiser-debuts-a-bunch-of-new-headphones-at-ifa

Disappointing, those replacements just don't look like they fill the same place as PX100s

Listening to my originals now, no idea how old they are but at least 9. Pretty sure they cost around £17, such good value. Unfortunately i'm now getting a small amount of low frequency distortion in the left driver.

Indeed. PX100 II has become one of my favorite headphones. Lovely sound signature and quality, comfy and light, and portable. I like open design as I love to play ocarina with headphones on, and closed design isn't really good for that. Open design of course provides better air and more natural sound aswell. Originally I bought px100 ii just for modding fun, but fell in love with their sound.

That does look quick and dirty. Wouldn't mess with the person wearing those

  Do these outperform the ksc75/35?
