PX100-II Review | Discussion Thread

To me, the PX 100 (on my second pair, the first pair broke) brings more worry than comfort. It really can't be overstated how bad the wiring going into the jack and grills is.The cable goes straight into the connectors and is soldered with virtually no strain relief. What this means is you're always checking to make sure you don't press on it, sit on it, pull on it...

When this one goes out the same way, I'm not buying another pair. I won't play into Sennheiser's planned obsolescence crap. Every bad review on these headphones has been mostly due to this single issue and Sennheiser has nothing to say about it.

Unfortunately, I can't recommend anything else with this sound signature. There may not be anything out there. As I said above, to me the VE Monks aren't far from these in terms of quality, if you don't mind earbuds. For many pieces, I actually prefer the Monks.

I think this was the case with the old straight jack. I bought them recently and now they come with an L jack with no problems.
The same happened with the first KSC75 I bought which failed at the jack and now they too come with an improved L jack. I have the KSC75 with headband mod and I like both the KSC75 and the PX-100 II, but they have different signatures. KSC75 on a headband is way better than with stock ear clips, very transparent with good tight bass and extended treble, PX-100 II is more soft on the highs, but lively and punchy enough as a whole, non fatiguing signature that I also like.

Here a photo with the new jack:

PX100IIs have more laid-back signature than VE Monk+. I love Monks but I think PX100II are nice to have aswell. Btw, I will get my red Monks tomorrow, finally.

I will be eager to hear your impressions! Still debating if i should re-buy px100. I remember at a head fi meet 10 years ago all i had was a rockbox ipod and px100. Nobody cared to listen to them. Hahaha.

Do red Monks sound different than transparent ones? I have two pairs of transparent Monks and soon two of red ones aswell.

I didn't find the monks to be top-heavy... They sound pretty laid back to me, but mostly neutral. Never fatiguing, just like the PX 100 II. And the comfort is superb! Better than even the Sennheiser. I tell you, those Monks have really made me reconsider this hobby. At this point, I just use them and my other high-end headphones are only used for critical listening. I'll probably sell all except the HD600.

By the way, how are you getting these red Monks? My girlfriend is so eager to have the red ones for some reason, she asks every other day about them. Where can I order those?

The red ones are massdrop exclusive but you can get plain color ones from veclan.com anytime.. If i had any extra reds id send one to you MorrisL. Thanks for your input. I always thought monk had a familiar sound signature...

Thank you for that... They might have another massdrop thing, and I'll get it then.

The thing about Monk is it doesn't leave much to be desired for casual listening... and even on listening where you deliberately sit down to enjoy music. For the really important stuff, like orchestral music where every detail is a color worth appreciating, you'll need a good large over ear headphone. And you're all set. With this, the PX 100 and a whole bunch of other headphones become redundant.

Yeah Monks are quite laid back but PX100II are even more. Monks seriously rules. Red Monks are from Massdrop as Vapman mentioned.

Well, that solves half of the problem, but I've never seen PX 100 jack being L shaped like that... The most recent one I bought was 3 months ago from Amazon and it's still the same lame-ass jack Chinese $2 earphones have the good sense to not use.

I heard massdrop will be exclusively selling the red ones for a full year.
I am sure if nobody else hooks you up, they will be on massdrop again sooner or later. Surely some kind soul might have extras stashed away.

Thanks again for your px100 thoughts. Maybe i will pass on them unless i see a used set cheap.

PS consider a zen 2 to replace the over ears :stuck_out_tongue_closed_eyes:

L jack seems pretty sturdy, I bought PX100II this week from local store. Maybe Amazon seller had an old stock with older versions with straight jack. To me, jack durability isn't really an issue as it is easy to fix myself.

Thanks, I'll keep an eye on that.

Yeah, don't bother with the PX 100... This is no HD 600.

Not sure I believe in high-end earbuds. The limitation that comes with that small design is always gonna take away something. Might as well get the big-boy Sennheisers for the truely important listening sessions.

Testing HD424 pads on px100, sound is quite great. Not so muddy anymore as bass tames a bit but is still present enough. Treble brightens a bit aswell, but I think not too much. Soundstage is better and overall sound is more airy. Fit is good, a bit loose tho. Comfort is suberb.
