Mangrove - Bridge to Fiction

This is one from last year, and I quite liked it at the time but it didn’t make my best of 2024 list. However you know those albums that’s just have that something that keep you coming back and each listen you like it a bit more..well this is one of those, such that I’ve been playing it quite a lot the last few weeks and it would definitely be in my best of 2024 list now. All the tracks are decent enough, accept the opening vocals/chorus to the first track which I hate (don’t let it put you off), however there are 2 real stand outs -
‘Stay’ ..as linked here.
and ‘A call to arms’. A 24 minute old school epic that is even better, very much in the IQ or Marillion mould. If a fan of either of those bands then definitely give these tracks and this album a go.

I also discovered the Jupiter Fungus album too late to get on my 2024 list, but again it’s a really good album that’s been getting plenty of plays recently. Rubbish band name mind!

I finally got around to giving this a listen and have been really impressed, it's a great sounding album that makes me want to listen to more of their material but sadly their older stuff isn't available on Qobuz.

I'm sure many of you are aware of The Crimson ProjeKCt and their Live in Tokyo release from 2014, but it has beena while since I listened to it and it's just sounding so good tonight that I couldn't resist posting and showing the album some love. Pick your favorite 'phones for live prog and enjoy.

new album : III of the group TALC

I love TALC! Solid rec! 😎

Topical Schtuff:

I tried to post this one yesterday when I posted it in the which headphone thread, but I couldn't because of the double posting thing so I'll put it here now. I think some folks here might find this album and band to be up their alleys.

Flame Drop - Flow

Here’s a recommendation from the Sea of Tranquility You tube Chanel. Instrumental guitar based prog, sort of Camel like but without prominent keyboards. Most people here should find something to like in this. I don’t know much about them, Qobuz offers scant details. I like it.
I had passed on this when posted because it was a YT link but I had it down to try and I’m liking this. I hadn’t heard this before but will definitely be following through with their latest release from last month-

Finally got around to listening to this and I'm very much enjoying it, some lovely guitar tones and the keyboards take a back seat. I did listen to their new release first and loved every track except the last one, which seemed to be a bad homage to The Great Gig In The Sky, the vocals are atrocious

the vocals are atrocious
Since my recent awakening to ‘modern’ prog due to a Qobuz subscription, I would say the vocals are the most likely area that disappoints. Plenty do have decent vocals, really outstanding vocals seem very rare, additionally weak vocals seem more prevalent than exceptional ones. The fact I hate dirty vocals (unless very sparing) also restricts a few options.

Oh no, I just mean on the one track, The Great Beyond - I get what they were trying to do (their own Great Gig In The Sky) but it just didn't work. For something like that you need phenomenal vocal talents and whoever did this just doesn't have what it takes. The music is great though, so it's not a total loss and the vocals don't start until about five minutes into the song.
I can't stand growling vocals either and it's normally an automatic dislike from me, though I did enjoy the new Opeth album, so I can take a teeny, tiny bit as long as it fits the music.

Bjorn Riis just dropped his new album! :guitar:

Thanks
Just added to my favourites. Coincidentally the last few days I’ve been through the whole Airbag catalogue Who I only discovered last year.

I also discovered Drifting Sun last year as their ‘veil’ album made my end of year list.

I’ve been checking out their back catalogue.

This is a very good one. Forsaken Innocence by Drifting Sun

Out of interest, what’s wrong with YouTube links? I do tend to use these a lot but if there’s a problem then let me know. I find them easy to find and link, bandcamp seems to have lots missing.
There’s no problem with them per se- I just don’t use YT as a source for much of anything, especially when it comes to sound quality. I generally don’t even click on them but rather make a mental note to seek it out via the streamer.

I don't listen to YouTube video or Bandcamp links for the simple reason that ROON is setup to play through my headphones and everything else comes through my speakers. I see a link and then search it out on Qobuz via ROON and this doesn't always work out, especially with very recent releases. So my loss, I just need to set system sound to my Holo Cyan 2 DAC when on a session and everything will come through my headphones.
