I'm 17... I dunno, prog just seems a little inaccessible to most people. It's probably the length of song/non-mainstream instrumental sound/structure. Basically, the music

Honestly source is more important than amping, imo. A good DAC would be better a better investment than a good amp. I have the DAC_II amp/dac combo, and find the amp too powerful for the K702s. Right now I use the K702s with a DAC intended for recording and monitoring, but still works great for music as it's quite neutral. But even the 702s sound decent out of a laptop jack if that's all you have to start with. Don't feel like you have to start with the best combo ever.

Yeah, I made one of my friends whos favorite band is 30 Seconds To Mars listen to all of Close To The Edge lol....she was just confused about how a song can be 18 minutes. To me, its gotta be over an hour for a song to feel long haha. Wish I could travel in a time machine back to the late 60s.

So Im pretty sure Im gonna narrow it down to the K701s and the HD600s, only because Ill be buying an amp/dac eventually and for the price point these 2 seem to be pretty popular. Man, Ive got like 50 tabs up on head-fi lol.

Thanks a lot, Ive always loved the looks of the K701/2, and since I enjoyed my K271s I know that the AKG sound suits me well. Are the 702s actually better? I know it would be a long way down the road, but the detachable cable with the K701 seems like it would make me lean more towards that.

it's the K702 that has the detachable cable. I've not tried the K271s, but absolutly love wearing and listening to the K702s. They are so comfortable, they are almost, if not more, comfortable than my Denon D5000s. And that's saying something. They are a different type of comfort though.

I would argue that the amp is more important than the DAC. The source, by bit rate/CD/Album is very important, but not the digital to analog conversion when compared to amping.

I think you might confuse the source with 128 vs 256 vs 320 vs lossless and the DAC.

My T1/HD800s sound nowhere near as good from CDs through my Cambridge Audio DacMagic, then through my FiiO5 amp as the do straight out of my laptop (256kps) and straight into my desktop tube amp (totally bypassing my DacMagic).

I would agree for your 600ohms that the amp would be more important, especially for your Senn 800 (i'm jealous) But for the K702's they don't really need that much juice to get the metaphorical party started.

When I get a real job, I'll have to get the 800's with a great amp. But that's not until I grow up.

Oops, guess I dont pay attention to these things. So I saw in the FS forum theres a pair of K701s going for 190, and HD600s for 200...should I just go for the k701s? And then once thats all settled, what should I purchase next? A decent dac, an amp or a cheap dac/amp? I appreciate all suggestions guys, I unfortunately have scourged these forums and still dont have a clue which direction I should head.

The K701s would be easier to drive, which considering your situation would be more ideal. With the HD600's you would need to invest in an amp right away to make them worth while. IMO.

Not to get too sidetracked. But have you made a post comparing your T1s and HD800s? I've love to read what you think between the two.

Actually from my own experience the K702 is harder to drive than the senns. I have not heard the K701 but I have owned the HD580, HD600, HD650, and HD 595. I just prefer a more balanced sound that does not over emphasize the bass like the senns did.

Ahh, from what I had read I was under the impression that the AKGs were much harder to drive to adequate listening levels.

AKG Personal Audio - K 701 - Specifications

The 701s have about 62 ohms of impedance, compared to the HD600 which has about 300 ohms of imedance.

62 < 300, making the 701s much easier to drive. While a good amp would help bring out subtleties, it is not necessary to appreciate the greatness of the headphone. Don't listen to crappy MP3s with them though, but they are not that difficult to drive, imo.
