Thanks, though I think it really is the location and not my photo of it that makes it interesting. To be honest, the more I look at my photo the more I think it's pretty crappy. I guess I was just walking through Shinjuku one evening and saw the guy walking past the strip club and just took a snapshot of it.

I didn't think it was that great of a photo, but I was flipping through a photobook by Shunji Ohkura, whose photography I really enjoy, and I noticed he took a shot in nearly the exact same place.

Of course I find his photo to be far more interesting than mine. I'm guessing he took his three or four years prior -- previously, the shop to the right was a drug store and if you can read Japanese you'd see that it's advertising "VIAGRA" in huge letters, as well as "ROGAINE" in the corner. In mine, I guess it's become a 24 hour seedy video shop.

Still, seeing his image made me go back to mine and see if I couldn't do something with it. Can't say there was much to salvage, kind of wish I were still in Tokyo to revisit the location to see if I can't say something about it. Oh well.

Oh, and Towert7, it's a strip club... you can find them in NYC and SF, I'll take a photo sometime

That's interesting partly because it breaks my impression of the angle/height of your photo by revealing the whole scene.

In some ways I like your photo better. I also like that the silhouette of the guy is like every late 80s/early 90s anime haircut.

If it was sharper I would think it was a cuttout.

jjcha, I like yours much better. The crop is smaller and more focussed which gives my eyes something to look at, rather than have them jumping all over the place as in Shunji Ohkura's picture. Yours contains lines for me to follow to the center, the other does not. Besides that, the contrast and darkness works perfectly with the subject. I'm normally not a fan of black and white, unless there is a fairly extreme contrast as in yours. Me like!

Thanks! I can make some 1600x1200 and 1680x1050 versions, but I'll have to check which ones I edited on large scale. That's the problem with my photos, it's as much post processing as it is actually taking a photo. The main things I look out for when taking a picture is that it's sharp (if needed), isn't under- or overexposed, and contains everything I want on it. The colors, contrast, vignette and possible grain are all done in Lightroom and Photoshop. I used to do a lot of digital art in Photoshop, so I guess that's why my preference goes to that method rather than getting it all right from the start.

Thanks. I don't typically upload full res images, partly because they take so long to upload, even on broadband, but also to limit potential misuse/theft. Most are 1280x960 or so.

That last one is very interesting. What was the inspiration for such an image, and more importantly, what was the inspiration for such a title? Still, great photography here, and in most other images in this thread; I wish I had such skills.
