Absolutely not! I literally know nothing about PP other than adjusting the WB and exposure from a RAW shot, so if anyone wants to do it, or tell me what would work, I'm more than open to it.

Wow, uofmtiger, that dragonfly headshot is awesome! Please do tell more about how you got that shot (and what you used, what settings, etc.).

Yeah, good call. I'm actually a bit surprised you took those with the Sigma - I haven't exactly heard good things about it, yet the pictures posted above are all pretty sharp and "contrasty." Perhaps its worth a deeper look into? (I've been itching for a better low-light lens).

Love this lens. Contrasty look was assisted by Picasa slider play.

Yes, I'm still a newb, but this Sigma 30mm f/1.4 seems pretty sharp to me at f/1.4, sharper at f/2.0 and excellently sharp at f/4.0. The key for me is that f/1.4 that allows me to go for shots that I'd otherwise have to turn on the flash, tripod-mount, or skip altogether. Of the three lenses I currently have, the Sigma 30mm f/1.4 is the one that has seen the most camera-time. For a walkaround lens, I'm waiting to read more reviews and examples from the new Sigma 18-125mm f/3.8-5.6 DC OS HSM lens. If that one performs as I hope it does, I'll be selling the Canon 18-55mm IS kit lens. (If anyone has this new Sigma 18-125mm f/3.8-5.6 DC OS HSM lens, please do give some impressions and examples.)

Here is another shot from a different angle. The earlier shot had a bit better light which made it easier to get the detail on his whiskers, but I also used a flash that was aimed upward. I took several shots of this little fella with my Canon 100mm macro. For some of the shots I used a kenko tube and a 1.4x teleconverter. I am pretty sure the first shot used that configuration. I am not sure if I had the kenko tube in place for this one. The first shot is posted with a 1000 x 913 pixels on my webpage ( Dragonfly photo - uofmtiger photos at pbase.com )

This dragonfly was unusually friendly. He even hung out on a twig while I went in and grabbed my camera.

If you can live without the longer focal length, I'd take a deeper look into Tamron's standard 17-55 f/2.8 for around $400. It's lightweight, built decently, retains superb sharpness, and, of course, has that extra bit of aperture for when you really need it. Obviously, if increased range is what you're looking for, then hold out for reviews of the Sigma; but otherwise, the Tamron will likely be a superior alternative.

Wil, I like the colors and contrast in the sunset pic. Great job man. The tree in the top right seems out of place and detracts just a tad. I usually pass right by sunset pictures, but the composition of this one is very special....even majestic. Something about the trees and the building and the colors and the contrast and the "imperfection" in the sunset itself, it's just gorgeous. Do you have a higher resolution picture? I'd love to make it my background

With your permission of course.

Very nice contrast, colours detail and interesting composition!

I would be forever grateful if future posters could include information in small print below photos such as ISO, lens make & model, shutter speed, aperture, focal length, filters used, etc. It's really just for newbies like me to understand more about how the shot was taken. I know a lot of the info is available from EXIF, but it would be so much easier if it was just laid out in front of me. Thanks!

For example, a snapshot of the Balmoral Hotel in Edinburgh:

info: 70mm, F5.6, 1/800, ISO200, Nikon 70-300VR w/ C-PL

PS: of course, if you'd rather keep the formula secret...

The weather is absolutely gorgeous today in Westchester, so I grabbed some decent dog-snaps while the lighting was ideal. The D200's metering had a tough time coping with the intense differences in contrast / light intensity, but all in all I'm pretty satisfied with these pictures.

(The second one went through some heavy post-processing; feel free to edit it to give it a more "natural" look).
