Nick Harper - Bloom

I'll never forget seeing him play it live. Sheer raw emotion.

The song starts about 45 seconds in.

P.S. Are we allowed to embed youtube stuff here? If not I'll remove.

6 & 12 String Guitar, by Leo Kottke. Also known as the "Armadillo Album." It's just Kottke with his guitars, playing solo. It has a bit of a Bluegrass/country feel, but do not let that put you off. This album has huge crossover appeal and might just turn you into a fan of this music. It has sold many, many copies over the years and those who know it love it.

Even better, it is something of an audiophile classic. The Red Book version is nicely recorded and sounds great. However, you can also find excellent vinyl pressings and it was released on SACD. I have the SACD and it has become one of my reference discs - a big reason why I bought the HD-800 was a listen to the Armadillo Album.

^ Totally agree.

The acoustic works that I never grow tired of are the songs of Elliott Smith and Nick Drake in general. If you have a chance to go through their discographies, they're worth exploring.

Here are my favorite "dominantly acoustic" albums:
  1. Elliott Smith - Either/Or (1997)
  2. Nick Drake - Pink Moon (1972)
  3. Nick Drake - Five Leaves Left (1969)
  4. The Mountain Goats - Heretic Pride (2008)
  5. Sufjan Stevens - Michigan (2003)
  6. Nick Drake - Bryter Layter (1970)
  7. Bill Callahan - Sometimes I Wish We Were an Eagle (2009)
  8. Elliott Smith - Figure 8 (2000)
  9. Bob Dylan - Highway 61 Revisited (1965)
  10. Elliott Smith - XO (1998)

Oh, and although I don't listen to him as much lately, Jack Johnson's albums are also great to explore for some chillout-at-the-beach type of relaxing, acoustic goodness.

Seen Roy Live too. Again very good. Nick's the more gifted of the two technically, but Roy's written some (edit: make that a lot of) great songs.

Edit: While I'm at it - I'll mention Jon Gomm, a relatively little known virtuoso acoustic guitarist singer songwriter, a fellow that I have the very good fortune to have made his aquaintance.

Difficult to pick a favourite of his. Amazing variety for just playing an acoustic. Some of the guitar playing is just flipping silly...

Unfotunately these aren't HD...

A number of good ones already listed and a many more out there, but in the end I'd have to narrow it down to a handful of truly great ones, especially my all time favorite... Mason Williams - Classical Gas

Other acoustic players I enjoy are California Guitar Trio, Acoustic Alchemy, Craig Chaquico and Adrian Legg, to name a few.
