cool thread.

noob question - what makes DJ cans separate from home enjoyment cans?  in other words, what do they do differently/better that makes them best suited for the DJ experience?

Found this picture of Armin Van Buuren with Technics RP-DH1200 from his www.armadamusic.com website

A bit hard to tell, but there is that distinct circle joint on the right hand side like here

I am not an expert but here is what I know.
DJ headphones are used in a live performance environment which is loud. So they need good isolation (closed back design).  DJs also need to cue next tracks which means one-ear listening, so DJ headphones have lots more swivels and rotation to allow one earpad to move away from the head/ear.
They also tend to have U-shaped frequency curves (bass and treble emphasis) which are where rhythm (bass and high-hat) are. This helps with synching beats between tracks in a mix comparing the live track playing on the club's sound system and the track one is cuing on the headphones. Also the U-shaped curve is typical of a club sound (heavy in the bass and treble and less in the mids) so listening to a track on a DJ headphone will give a better idea of how it will sound on the club's sound system.
They also tend to be more sturdy since DJs tend to break headphones quite easily (abuse them).  And last the headphone is part of the DJs performance and look so they tend to be more flashy.
