I am buying a new pair of headphones soon and i am thinking of getting a small portable amp to power them..

I am just wondering what you would recommend. I would like it to be:
1) (very) portable. This is very important.
2) Long(ish) battery life. Preferably Li-ion as they will be smaller in size and last longer..
3) Be able to bypass the headphone socket on my ipod

Any suggestions?

Thanks for your help.

You could look at the fiio e7. You could buy a special cable that plugs into the ipod that completely bypasses the headphone jack. About the size of an iphone. I don't own one yet but plenty of head-fiers own them and seem to give them good praise.

If money is no issue (or want to save up for something really, really good), look into a P-51 Mustang by RSA. They show up here and there in the FS section. Small and about 50 hrs of battery life.

PA2v2

^ PA2V2 is pretty thick for a portable, IMO.  iBasso T3 is extrememly small, powerful and just barely over your $100 budget.

As several people have said, the headphone bypass is accomplished via a LOD (line out dock) cable that terminates with a 3.5 mm jack that's the input to the amp.

Yeah definitely get a LOD. Fiio has some extremely cheap ones

Knowing what headphones you will use the amp with is helpful.  I have a Fii0 E5 that I love with my Etymotics because it has a bass boost and is tiny, but the Etys need very little power.  BUT...it does little for my M50s and is a joke with the HD650.  Because your budget is low, Fii0 is good.  iBasso also has some great options for you.

Seeing no replies to my thread and this one seems to be heading a similar path, does anyone have any recommended match for UM3X? I could prob stretch to to $150, which would put the iBasso T3 in the mix (with a LOD) - but are there other good, portable options? I like the look of the FiiO i11, and a retailer has also suggested an LDMk1+
