Last night's Friday concert from the NCH Dublin (video will be deleted next Thursday, i.e. in 6 days).

(watch out for the conductor Jonas Alber, man, he really enjoys himself when he waves that stick!)

RTÉ National Symphony Orchestra
Jonas Alber conductor
Hugh Tinney piano

Beethoven
Egmont Overture / 9’
Piano Concerto No. 5, ‘Emperor’/ 38’
Symphony No. 7 / 36’

An all-Beethoven concert – that great, tumultuous titan as contemporary and cutting edge today as he ever was – and a concert celebrating the 60th birthday of HughTinney, the leading Irish pianist of his generation.

Hugh, variously described as ‘a true poet’, ‘a servant of music’ and ‘brilliant in the best sense of the word’, HughTinney is one of the supreme interpreters of the music of Beethoven. The chance to see him centre stage with the composer’s last Piano Concerto, the mighty, magnificent torrent of the Emperor, is one not to be missed. It is music of sweeping grandeur, blazing invention and blistering impact. Prepare yourself for a hi-octane experience guaranteed to burn itself into your heart, body and soul.

Jonas Alber – ‘an unparalleled magician of sound’ (Braunschweiger Zeitung) – conducts the RTÉ National Symphony Orchestra in Beethoven’s Egmont Overture, seething with angst, anger and acclamation for the heroic opponent of tyranny it portrays, and the sublime Seventh Symphony.

Considered by the composer (and who are we to argue) ‘one of my best works’, it’s a dazzling firework display with themes that ricochet around the orchestra with wild abandon before bursting into flaming brilliance. And flaming brilliant it is, too.
