Hi friends,
Just ordered one to be used as my secondary player. Now, gotta invest in some 2.5 to 4.4 adapters. Any suggestions on the best of best out there?

I can't help with the specific question I'm afraid but that sounds a very bad idea, I think it would put a lot of stress on the already weak 2.5mm socket. If you do go this route, get something like this with a flying lead to try and avoid damage.

Sure thing. That's what I had in mind.

I've been using a 2.5 mm to 3.5 mm adaptor (for single ended use with a balanced cable), hasn't been a problem (have Effect Audio Cable and adaptor from them). You already have the 4.4 mm cable?

Effect Audio, will check them out. I have WireWorld platinum nano eclipse with Pentaconn 4.4 and I am using it on Z1R with Sony WM1Z

Well I finally got chance to get some music onto the player last night.

Bit of a mix (some Joe Bonamassa, Hans Zimmer, Micheal Jackson). Very impressed with the sound quality through the Grado 325i's. Haven't had chance to try balanced yet.

Nice little touches like being able to view the lyrics, etc. Interface works well too.

My only little debate within myself at the moment is just file types. I used DBPoweramp to rip to FLAC and 128kbps MP3 for my less serious mobile devices (Garmin running watch, etc.) I did about 20 CD's.

However looking at the file space that one FLAC album takes up I'm debating about doing the second rip as 320kbps AAC instead. Then I have a choice of what type I would prefer on the 300R (and just take up less space on the SD card).

I'm not planning on moving all 750 of my CD's onto the player, but I'm a music lover who just enjoys so many different genres it's always nice to have the choice whilst on the move :)

The other thing I was going to mention was the item I got to further protect it. I'll still purchase the official case (or something like it) but I got one of these and it's pretty much a perfect fit. Just as an extra item to protect it whilst I'm carrying it around in the ruck sack.

For £3.50 it's a nice little addon. Bit of room around it in the case and some space at the top (perfect for the headphone plug). Does the job nicely.

@Andrew Harper id suggest if you’re buying albums try MQA versions that are available on https://www.onkyomusic.com/GB/home they are flac but aren’t anywhere near as large a file as most other flac rips

MQA FLAC files will be the same size, or slightly larger than CD quality (16/44) files. They will be significantly smaller than the file size of of a FLAC file at the decoded/unfolded sample/bit rate though.

Yeah I was looking at the store last night, some nice choices. Thanks for the advice :)

I listened to some of the samples and a lovely sound, full and rich, really nice.

I know it's a high-res geared codec but a shame that it's not available as a ripping option as yet.

Admittedly though the support for it on players is still limited at the moment.

.

Somebody also recommended HDTracks, but for the same bitrate (192/24) they charge twice the price for the same album (in my case - don't judge me - Yes' Close to the Edge). As a technophobe, I'm sure I'm missing something, here, some subtle distinction. If anybody knows, please pass it on! Thanks!

Without trying to get off topic, yes I agree with you it can be a costly experience.

Maybe they have a better deal with the recording labels than some others? However I did notice the price differences like you mention.

I was always a fan of SACD and DVD Audio (still get the occasional SACD disc from Japan) but the nasty thing about it was always the cost of the discs (and lack of choice in some respects). If HDTracks and others are not careful they'll hurt themselves in the long run.

I have no issue with the occasional "treat" purchase but I can't see me buying all the HD versions of CD's I already have.

It will never be available as a ripping option, because the way it is designed to work. Unless you want something like what meridian are doing with most of their mqa stuff which is just being sent trough some algorithm to make them smaller. Otherwise what they are doing with the files that are getting new masters and have real sonic benefit from going mqa(though that remains to be seen if it's any better than what we already have) can only be done by them in their lab. Also how Meridian be able to cash in on your rip's, until they figure that out or mqa fails you will not see any option to encode anything with it.

Yes that was more or less what I thought. It's just too specialised to be available to your average audiophile. It was just wishful thinking I guess, haha :)

Can someone solve a little mystery for me?

I was looking at the different versions of Thriller on HDTracks.

There's the DSD version (which I understand is more or less a SACD master, so very hi-resolution).

176/24 FLAC which of course is also very good.

I assume the DSD version is the better choice but I'm puzzled why the FLAC version is £9 more....

Maybe DSD is less supported and that's why it's cheaper?
