It's a good question. The 5G line-out in fact shares the same internal amp and signal path with the headphone out, and thus the SQ. It's not the true line-out that bypasses the internal amp in the usual sense. It's much more convenient to use the headphone out for the amp and save the port for other things. Just set the volume at 0db or 90% level, and that's it!

There is a discussion thread on this topic. Feel free to make your comments there.

Sound is excellent, even better if you fiddle with the Custom EQ (very powerful).

I listen to it at 23/25 volume, I don't know if its because I'm insane or going deaf.

Maybe both. That's a very loud volume you're listening with them, especially IEMs.

Don't know what it is but with the included earbuds, 23/25 is much much louder than with the Shure E2C's I'm using now. Maybe higher impedence? (or something)

Motorola V3i, stock mini-USB earbuds and the Motorola Audio Player

Salling Clicker controlling iTunes on the PC

The mini-USB to 3.5mm adapter sounds bad: distortion and low volume

I saw the Rockbox thing discussed earlier in the thread. I went to the site but I could not figure out exactly what it would do for me (and my 5G iPod). Could someone enlighten me on the tangible benefits?

Thanks,
Neil

iRiver iHP-120 (20GB) w/ Rockbox, 28 hour internal battery, music ripped to EAC LAME 192 VBR, line out to Xin SuperMacro 3 v.6 w/ OPA627BPs, to Ety ER-4s w/ Westone custom earmolds.
Pure audio heaven.
