Redid the system quite a bit since I posted here last. Perhaps the largest update is that I now only have one speaker

Equipment -
Synthesis Matrix DAC (Western Electric prewar output capacitors)
Western Electric 111c Transformers setup to convert stereo to mono
Melos MA-333 Preamp
Western Electric 124-b amplifier

Speaker -
Western Electric KS-6368 Horn
IPC LU-1000 Midrange Driver (It's a permanent magnet version of a Western 555 with original western 555 diaphram)
Jensen RP-302 Tweeter
Jensen PMJ-18 Woofer (72 pound woofer that costed around $250 in 1930s)
Custom crossover as horn plays low enough to provide generous overlap with woofer upper frequency range

Mouthwatering setup :)

I wonder if the HE-1 can still be elevated with the addition of a Boulder 3010 preamp in the chain
Thank you. The Select II pre-amp is really good. I have spent many years - gone back and forth several times - sold an HE1. Tried to replicate it - failed - regretted the sale - bought another. Realised the DAC was the limiting factor. Tried dCS - massively underwhelmed. Tried MSB - and bang...

I just checked-out the price of the Boulder 3010 - LOL! :slight_smile::slight_smile::slight_smile:

It’s a beast of a preamp worthy of the HE-1 perfection along with MSB Select II DAC :)

Unusual to see such a large subwoofer used with headphones :) :relaxed: How are you enjoying the Megatron? looks awesome!
Hahaha. He is a very good subWoofer.

Megatron is so fantastic. It's very complex/3D sounding with zero harshness and thick low-end. Right up there with the T2.
I've heard people say it can be a more relaxed amp but unlike with the carbon or kgsshv, you can push it louder ( say 90db) with something like Led Zeppelin and it because it doesn't have the upper-frequency glare, you get these meaty sounding chords effortlessly ripping right threw your headspace.

It's the kind of amp where you power it on at 10:30pm when the house is asleep — give it 30 minutes to warm-up and have a stiff drink — then head into the hot room (literally) and push that borderline dangerous 85+db range for 2 hours and walk out feeling like you just were at a concert.
