How does the 10Y sound?
Hi @Nada. It sounds terrific. I am mostly a speaker person but still want my headphone experience to be good when I do listen that way. I've had EC and DNA amps before but I really prefer not to have dedicated headphone equipment around. High impedance headphones work great directly off the preamp and sound at least as good as they did off the EC/DNA amps, maybe better. Low impredance headphones would still require a dedicated headphone amp (or speaker amp as I did with my HE-6).
Practical advice I'd give on the 10Y: I had mine built with a +12db input transformer for one input for lower-lever phono sources. I think this is necessary to give headphones enough juice. Also, I thought the HD800S still didn't have quite enough oomph and preferrred the ZMF headphones. VC is slightly more efficient than Atrium so I've come to love the VC in particular on it. But both Atrium and VC work well. Using the other inputs require a volume knob at 70% or more. Using the +12db requires the knob at 25% to 40%, depending on source level, and sounds punchier.
