really? thats the opposite from what I've heard everyone else say.  Especially when you say horrendously easy to drive. Have you heard them  un-amped or with a portable amp ever? they sound so weak.

easy to drive, like... in easy to drive compared to headphones which actually are hard to driver properly like old Yamaha Orthos e.g.
The K701 need an amp, but they'll be driven fine by almost any dedicated headphone amp. But to make them sound decent you need some tubes to tame the 7k-10k spike.

K701 wants about the same as power as the HE5/LE.

This.^^^
roBernd is high as a kite me thinks.

I would say roughly 500mw-1watt to properly drive the K701, anything over that isn't really over kill but it wont really make that much difference.

The EF5 was made to drive the HE5/LE, and I think it put out 2 watts.

HE-500 sound to me like.....

They are so wonderful. They pack a lot of detail as well as a musical....creativity? You can hear so much but at the same time it's just so easy to get lost in the very soft and warm mids.

Those pictures described what you were saying perfectly.
what amp/dac do you use when they sound like that?

W5LE  with Rega Planet or VPI turntable.
