The K701 need an amp, but they'll be driven fine by almost any dedicated headphone amp. But to make them sound decent you need some tubes to tame the 7k-10k spike.

really? thats the opposite from what I've heard everyone else say. Especially when you say horrendously easy to drive. Have you heard them un-amped or with a portable amp ever? they sound so weak.
