Philips SHP9500 Discussion Thread

Yes, 9500 is more like 600 than 598. And 598 is more like X2. The imaging of 9500 is obvious worse than X2 or 598. But 9500 is much natural than either 598 or X2 to my ear. So I prefer 9500 to both of them.

Just to spice it up a little bit and make it even more confusing! Fwiw I think the soundstage and imaging on the 598 blows away the x2. I think I catch your drift tho

I heard SHP9500 sound as good as the more expensive HD600, is it true? also is there any known quality issue with the SPH9500?

That's the hype train exaggerating.  The SHP9500 are exceptional (especially when modded http://tinyurl.com/z48euu5 ) but in no way are they equivilent or better than the HD600s.  I've owned and enjoyed HD580/600 cans continuously since 1993 and also own the SHP9500 so I feel more than qualified to make this statement.

No QC issues that I am aware of.

I pulled the trigger on this over the HD598SE. Anyway, I was wondering if you guys could recommend replacement pads or some pads that would fit at least. If I'm replacing the Pads in the future, I would like to retain / keep it as an open-back headphone. I will be wearing these for long hours.

Thanks

If you replaced the pads and pulled away the cups, I believe the soundstage could expand.

Do you think I should opt for this or wait for a 598 SE? Already own the HD600 and ATH A900x. Looking for beater cans that would be better with orchestral and vocals/indie music.

If you already own the HD600 I highly doubt your experience will improve with either the 9500 or the 598. It seems the 600 is an upgrade to those too, not the other way around - and this is coming from an HD598SE lover!

Anyways, out of the two, I think the 598 is the better can for your tastes, its soundstage is unbeatable, and when listening to orchestal music, that's what makes the difference.

For a spare beater, sure. Can't beat it. Like a mini 600 with a little brighter treble. The HD600 and ATH are already as good or better though. I never liked the 598 and found the 9500 to beat it pretty soundly across the board, but that's just one man's opinion. 598 images a bit better, but i think the soundstage is wider on the 9500.

Just got my SHP9500, and WOW, a $60 headphone shouldn't sound THIS AMAZING. Even without burn in, I already prefer the Philips over my HD558. With a slight eq increase on the lower end and a slight decrease on the highs, it's now one of my favorite open back headphone.
Anyone here get good results from 100+ burn in on those babies?

Mine are approaching that level and no change at all.

I can tell there is a noticeable difference even just after 10 hours of burn in. The slightly over bright treble have been toned down and the mid bass quantity have also been slightly increased. I will report back around 50 - 100 hours. As far as comfort goes, I still prefer the HD558 as the SHP9500 is too loose fitting and the earcups are not deep enough. Time to try the HM5 pads on them.
