Philips Fidelio X2?!

I don't see the Beyer pads being good for the X2, at all. First, if you're speaking of 880/990 velour pads, those leak horribly through the pads, while the X2 pads function almost as well as a leather pad in seal.

The 880/990 pads are HORRIBLE for headphones that rely on seal between the driver and the ear (i.e. putting those pads on closed headphones = sucked out bass, super tinny treble).

This is why I'm super skeptical on pad mods.

I don't trust anything that isn't A/B compared with stock.

Like say having a stock X2, and having an X2 with different pads, SIDE BY SIDE and compared.

Expectation bias always wins.

What MAY work for the X2 is the Beyer 770 velours, as those are quite different from 880/990 velours and made to seal.

So which cable on amazon would you guys recommend as a shorter replacement for the longer one that comes with the headphones?

Would occ silver cables make the highs on the X2 harsh, anyone reckon? Anyone here using silver cables?

Well it depends on cable...

General consensus for silver cables are their affinity to deliver better highs. Thus they may end up being crisper or even harsh for X2. But the situation can differ from brand to brand.

IMO it is safer to choose a good quality copper for X2 unless someone tries and recommends silver.

Would either cable offer different sound quality (when used with an iPod or On-Board sound on PC), or would it not matter?

In my opinion cable sound is snake oil... so I'd say no.

Agreed, unless the cable has a critical problem (like X1's cable having very high resistance), there's no need to change it. X2's cable is more than enough.

If anyone wants a coiled cable for their X1 or X2:
I'm using a coiled cable from Sennheiser. It's sold as a replacement cable for the HD 215. The regular aftermarket coiled cables I found were of pretty low quality.

While Monoprice cables are great (just got a premium 10-foot RCA cable yesterday), I have to advise against using the premium cable linked to above.  I have a few of those, and they are very stiff and, more importantly, heavy.  There's a possibility it could slip out of the X2s.  Ergonomically, it would be a nightmare.  The other cable is fine, though it's not designed to sit flush, so there will be that bit of gold plating exposed where it goes into the cup.

Do you think FX-850 has a similar sound signature to X2?

I hate to answer because I haven't had the X2 real long. I will say this about the FX850, for an IEM they certainly rival some the of the full size cans I have, on all fronts. The X2 is special in it's own right. The FX850 at FIRST can appear to be a little boomy on the bass side, but to me with a well balanced FLAC file, everything is so smooth. I have heard that the treble can be a bit much for some, I have 0 issues with treble. I hate to be redundant about the FX850 but the thing is it is a sound signature that just agrees with me. The tone and timbre is really sweet, and the details just seem to slip through. There are many folks in the FX850 thread that have spent a lot of time developing mods and claim they have made it a better IEM, I have kept mine stock.

I also enjoyed the Fidue A83 a lot, but I had to return them because I was having some issues with the left side cutting out. The Fidue is incredibly detailed and balanced and showcases itself in the amount of details it shows. Comfort issues can be a problem.

That said, I love my X2 thus far. I am impressed with the quality of the entire package. The bass has been controlled and the treble tame. I dont think in an open hp there is a better bang for the buck. I can see holding on to these for a while and in contrast the HE400 I had didn't last long.
