I think if you look at the L1 reviews, they are ok, but not nearly as beaming as the reviews for the X1 are.

It sounds pretty amazing without one. I tried it briefly w/ a Vali, and I think I prefer them un-amped.

Hmm I had my heart set on the P7s but the X1s are almost half the price. I could get an amp and the X1 for the price of the P7s.

I cant believe the difference even 10-20 hours use makes to these headphones, and I do consider myself a burn-in believer. Everything - clarity, bass impact - has improved dramatically over the cans straight out of the box. Tyll's review says more than I could hope to say here, but for those who are still sitting on the fence I can only add my vote to the others who've fallen in love with these cans. If this is what Philips is capable of at this price point, imagine what they could do if they sat down to design a 2K planar phone like the PM-1 .......

X1 is definitely worth the money. I would buy second set if I can find $149 Amazon deal.
