The bottom line is simply that the communication occurs, not how properly it is accomplished.
Yes there is a proper way to speak and write, and I believe the degradation is indicative of a myriad of issues, but in spite of the errors, slang, and typo's we have seen a dramatic increase in communication through the internet.
A great deal of it has even been positive.

I have to agree with you on these. Text messaging is lost on me for the most part. I can understand if you are in a situation when you can't talk and it is imperative that you contact someone. I can also understand if you have lost your voice. But if neither of those apply to you, why text when you can talk? Talking on the phone while driving, however, is not so much stupid as it is dangerous.

I find poor grammar very annoying and somewhat disturbing. It is very easy to write a coherent sentence, yet many people can't do it; especially kids around my age (I'm 19 as of last month). Was it hard to learn how to read well and express myself intelligently? Absolutely not. Anyone could do the same, but many don't. Whether it be laziness or apathy, many people simply don't learn.

I hate text message grammar, I use proper english almost completely
I hate "lol" I never use it unless I actually did "laugh out loud" which is rare
I hate people sitting behind me in lecture halls or move theaters and putting their feet on my chair. I knocked over some punk kids candy "accidentally" one time because of it.
And I hate people who TALK during lecture and movies. Honestly. Don't come if you have higher priorities.

indian translation grammar (this isn't meant to be racist, hindi is not an easy language to learn, and I realize it is structured very differently, but "thanking you kindly be telling me how I am to be doing" gets pretty annoying, pretty quick)

and the biggest one of all time:
the inability of younger kiddies (this means ~25 and down) to read through sarcasm, tongue-in-cheek, or other off the cuff forms of humor/irony, and then to add to this peeve, when they take it as a personal insult, get huffy, and act like its time to "man up and defend honor, ME HE MAN!!" (oh and if you were curious, this, this peeve relates to the entire post, IRONY MUCH??)

/waits for someone to act like I'm being racist/offensive/cruel and start a flamewar

Interesting opinion good sir, though I think you may have made an arse of yourself by generalizing millions of scholars. Apparently you have a problem with it, instead of standing on your soap box, I recommend getting a degree in teaching and removing the blinders of the ignorant. Until that time, I believe you are spewing as much trash as anyone you are speaking of.

a couple of full stops in there would help the grammar just a wee bit.

Personally, I think people should lighten up on the whole grammar thing. I would rather have someone write something useful with [minor] grammatical errors rather than well structured dross.

I would also add the comment that if grammar is your biggest bugbear, you should probably look to help address other real problems. Perhaps if you volunteered at a soup kitchen you might realise that a misplaced apostrophe or incorrect use of their, there or they're is far too trivial to be of any real concern.

As to the original topic, I know many Asians who add 's' to singular items to make them plural even though they are collective nouns. I wonder if this propensity to add the 's' is cause by confusion about the use of the same noun to identify either a single item or a group, eg. sheep. This is further compounded when we use words like gear to refer to any number of items in a collection, eg. hi-fi gear (amp, CD player, cables, headphones), but if you refer to more than one gear on your bike the the plural carries an 's'. unfortunately, there doesn't appear to be a rule, so we just have to learn each case.

It drives me nuts when I read a posting such as "that head-fier has a lot of gears." Would you say that you have a lot of softwares or hardwares or underwears?

What are your pet peeves? (spellin' corrected!)

Another is the improper use of it's/its

It's = contraction of "it is" or "it has" e.g. - It's a beautiful car.

Its = possessive form of it e.g. - The chicken couldn't make up its mind whether to cross the street!

stop being a grammar ******

When someone around me chews loudly with their mouth open I honestly go insane. When someone around me chews loudly with their mouth open in a quiet environment and I'm trying to listen to something else, well then I just about explode.
