If you're going to assemble a PC:

1 - Never settle for anything less than optimal
2 - Never order thinking you will be able to complete it over the summer.  By the time you have everything you need, there would likely have been sales, updates, etc.
3 - Do it smart.  If you can get a 5970 for the price of a 7770, by all means go for it.
4 - Do it right.  Can I even count how many times I've been brought a CPU that has at least 40 pins bent......
5 - If you plan on skipping any of these, you might as well skip #1.  Go ahead, settle for less!  While your at it, pick yourself up an NES and play some Zelda.  Going to be hard to find a Nintendo Power

Really? Do you buy used cpu?

All my new cpu purchases never had a problem

Tried Planetside 2 again. Still hate it.
we agree on something!!!

It's boring.
The battle mechanics and everything was what bored me.

Played an hour of it and noped it out

That was the easiest game I ever had the ability to decide on if i should uninstal.

Lol. The SNES is home to some of the greatest titles in gaming, one of which is Chrono Trigger. The sounds, the effects, the graphincs, and most of all, the plot. That's what I love about that game. It's a technological marvel in itself. Oh yeah, there's also Final Fantasy 1-6 (damn I love those games).

The N64 brought not much fun into the mix. I was pretty into the first Smash Brothers title, and SM64 (so much fun). Ocarina of Time was annoying as I still couldn't get a hold of the controls. Then there was Majora's Mask, which I never tried.

Oh yeah, there was also the GBA (I got to own the original and the SP), which was my favorite handheld console before the PSP. I got to play Dawn of Souls (FF 1&2), as well as Yoshi's Island, SMB3, FF4 (again), and (wait for it)...Tactics Ogre: The Knight of Lodis. I had so many memories on this thing...and I still have it. Two of them, actually: one of them is blue, and is pretty much broken (though it could still play games); the other is pink and has a brighter display...and it belongs to my sister (but as no one plays it anymore...).

After the 64 was...the GCN. I never got to play a game on that damned thing. Oh well.

The Wii was probably my favorite...at first. SMB Wii was a helluva lot of fun, and I managed to finish SMG, and I played a bit of SMG2. I had the white one first, and I digged the black one, but my mom was so into the red one. We brought the white one back to the Phils, and bought the red one. Oh, how I hate the red one. My discs couldn't be accepted, and I couldn't make a Mii at all...now I wish we returned to the Phils to get the white one.

Nowadays I find myself playing PvZ or Pac-Man Championship Edition Deluxe 2 (long title, huh?) on the PS3, or Minecraft on my desktop, with my sis manning my laptop, and my dad's HTPC running the local home server. Everything else is just gathering dust...

Super Smash Bros.  was killer, the only reason I wished I had a N64/GC/Wii during their respective generations.  My father now has a used goods store, and has pretty much anything I want in a given time.

At the moment hes got a N64, Gamecube, Wii, 2x Xbox, PSone, 3x Xbox 360, and a PS3.  Might borrow the PS3 and to play The Last of Us, looked cool on Gameinformer

Pssh. Depends how up to date with the latest stuff you are. Back when I was really following the latest components I could pick out and build a PC in under three days. If you aren't up to date, then yeah getting all the research done first is gonna slow you down a lot. My first custom desktop took me a lot time to get together.

My second PC (gaming) took me the whole summer to collect $ and build.  The desktop itself was about $400 after rebates, etc.  If I waited until Black Friday, I would have gotten better specs for the same price.

No.... LOL
People bring me their half assembled machines.  Apparently it is hard to align the two arrows on the CPU/socket >.>

When I was building my PC, putting in the CPU was basically the first step, so while I was taking off the plastic cap on the socket and opening the arm, my arm was shaking sooo badly. I was scared to accidentally drop it or misalign it or something it was funny.

I agree. Timing is important, but sometimes you just have this crazy need to upgrade. My dad even bought about 3TBs of external storgae over the course of a year.

+1. Nobody likes used, except on a tight budget.

Oh...it is? Well, I can't say for certain as I haven't assembled a PC yet, but my dad didn't have problems except with the GPU...and the software.

sarcasm friend, you just unlock the socket, and place the CPU on the socket with the two triangles matching, and lock the CPU in the socket.
I actually made a mistake myself once..  The motherboard I had wasn't top notch, and the CPU didn't sit flush in the socket.  Bent half of the CPU pins, had to fix them one by one with a credit card (and patience).

I only get this "frenzy" at night.  Almost bought the AD1000x and a 1440p korean display....  Just bought a Nokia 808 the other day, so I really need to be a bit more conservative

Maybe if my damn AD900x and UX31A will sell, I'll upgrade my desktop.

Jul 23, 2013 at 4:19 AM Post #2,248 of 9,120
So I really want to setup a new desktop, I currently have this:

  1. Antec 300 Illusion (Replace fans with Enermax TB Red 120mm fans and a Bitfenix 140mm red)
  2. AMD 955 BE
  3. CM 212+ Evo
  4. 2x2GB 1600 G.Skill Ripjaws
  5. Gigabyte mATX AM3+
  6. Xonar DG
  7. NZXT Fan Controller
  8. Rosewill Silver 550W
  9. 1.5TB Seagate Green
  10. 128GB OCZ Agility 3
  11. Powercolor 6850 1GB

I'd really like to sell it all but would like to know whether or not to upgrade RAM > Sell, or to sell in pieces.  How much do you guys think I can realistically get for this machine?
