  280x gets more updates, and will likely crossfire better. Single card performance is important too as many games tend to have issues with CFX/SLI at launch. The current batch of 280x is just a 7970 rebrand. Supposedly between now and January, Tahiti XTL will emerge.
 
Most of the games I play do not even support crossfire..
 
I would much rather have the added support of the 280x than the free games that come with the 7970 haha.
 
But if you have the motherboard and psu, crossfire will be cheaper. Just some obvious caveats

GTX 285 is 40-60 USD, 7970 might drop to $200 on BF. I would just hate to get a new card and in 6 months regret it. That's why I'm waiting to see how next Gen consoles impact PC gaming.
 
Can always find yourself a cheap 285 and wait it out with me

haha, waiting for TW3. Going to buy the quietest card that runs the game in 1440p. Afraid that the 7970 may not be enough, and the 290c is too loud

Heh, I can tell you, the GTX 285 is definitely a really nice card.  I'm running two of the reference models in SLI and I haven't had any weird issues for a while.

Nice! I currently have a 7870 and it's no slouch for a mid-range card.
