Joe Bloggs, I'd suggest downloading the PreSonus 18-page tutorial "Dynamics Processors".

It's clearly written and includes a number of set-up "examples" for vocals, percussion, keyboard, and fretted instruments.

Compression is great if used properly. I love the sound of the vintage 1176 compressor. It can add color and smooth richness. So compression is not always bad. In fact if properly used, it can be great.

For the DIY and electronics people, here is an analysis of the 1176 compressor unit commonly found in many recording studios
