Go see the movie Waiting. Then you'll know.

To the OP, though, this also happened to me about two months ago. I ordered a pizza at around 2am (place closed at 4am), and it just never showed up. I had had a few to drink that night, but my friends confirmed I gave the correct phone number and I had no missed calls on my phone or anything, so it was a straight up no-show. Luckily I was paying cash on delivery. Nevertheless, kinda bizarre and a little annoying.

Because the workers are usually getting ready to close up and leave. They can be a tad bit grumpy when someone comes in ten minutes before closing. Also, they'll often have to re-prepare the kitchen which means your food may take awhile.

It may take awhile among other things too.

And yeah, i did not like it when my manager went to lock the doors and let a customer in.

Let's see... you order food and the person uses their personal car and gas, and drives it over to your (possibly) lazy ass. I see the logic in your statement, and I used to somewhat agree with that sentiment. However, in many states, servers make money only on tips. Their paycheck is literally $0. So in fact it is entirely up to the customer to pay the server. When I make deliveries I get paid hourly, so I do get a paycheck. However, you have to be a cheap person to stiff a driver $2 on a $10 delivery. I personally wish it were the case that the tip were included in the price of the meal, like I believe it is in some other countries.

One caveat, however. I have friends who are waiters, and they and their other server friends typically go out to bars afterward to smoke and drink and bitch about customers. I think that when you have the audacity to complain about a "cheap" 15% tip, but you blow half your tips on smokes and overpriced booze, you need to check your attitude.

I honestly have no idea, how things are run on the mainland, but here in Hawaii, delivery men, are given a allowance for gas, or they would use the resteraunt's car to deliver the goods, since it has stickers and decals on it that advertises the goods.

A lot of my firends work in the food industry, waiters, cooks, greeters, and what not. And they tell me up front, sure they mess with people's orders, but that's mainly because they hate the waiter, or the customer was a total ****** while ordering. Like the bit of cheese burger with no cheese, then being drunken idoits.

BTW: People always think that they deserve more than they are due. Some waiters think that they deserve a tip at all when they drop the plate onto the table instead of taking the time of just placing it on the table. I mean seriously they have about 5 minutes at most of dealing wiht us when we enter the door until when we leave, but those 5 minutes can be the differance of a 20% tip, and simply no tip at all.

What I don't get is that sure, you drive a dinky car to deliver food to my door. Thank you, but why should I tip you on the same level as the people who have to deal with me, fill my glass, ask me if I want dessert, remember who ordered what, and so on. As I see it deliverymen only have to get it from the kitchen, box it, drive to your house, and ring your door bell.

Do they cook? no
Do they wait on you? no
Do they do anything extra ordinary? no
Do they get an allowance for gas? yes
Do they have to remember who ordered what? no

The point is, why tip the deliverymen extra? Or on the same standing as a busboy? They don't do anything extraordinary. The food is already more expensive than ordering it at the resteraunt, and the whoel point of ordering out is not really having to tip.

Sure I do tip delivermen, but only if the food arrives, hot, and within a 30 minute time window. Sure, it's rough, but think of it this way, everyone has standards.
