You're doing your job. If the pay is crap, find something else. There are almost always retail (walmart/sears/etc) and fast food joints that are hiring.

When I make deliveries I get paid hourly, so I do get a paycheck. However, you have to be a cheap person to stiff a driver $2 on a $10 delivery. I personally wish it were the case that the tip were included in the price of the meal, like I believe it is in some other countries.

I don't tip the guy at Mcdonalds, the salesman at Macy's, or the ice cream man. I know guys who work the corners and risk getting ripped by cops, do you think they ask their clients for tips?

What I don't get is that sure, you drive a dinky car to deliver food to my door. Thank you, but why should I tip you on the same level as the people who have to deal with me, fill my glass, ask me if I want dessert, remember who ordered what, and so on. As I see it deliverymen only have to get it from the kitchen, box it, drive to your house, and ring your door bell.

Do they cook? no
Do they wait on you? no
Do they do anything extra ordinary? no
Do they get an allowance for gas? yes
Do they have to remember who ordered what? no

The point is, why tip the deliverymen extra? Or on the same standing as a busboy? They don't do anything extraordinary. The food is already more expensive than ordering it at the resteraunt, and the whoel point of ordering out is not really having to tip.

Do they cook? no --> I DO
Do they wait on you? no
Do they do anything extra ordinary? no --> My work makes deliveries only, so yes.
Do they get an allowance for gas? yes --> NO
Do they have to remember who ordered what? no --> Yes

You tip the delivery man because you don't have to leave your house, use your car, etc. And because it's customary.

Yea, I mean, I only work part-time for money for audio equipment, so it's not that big a deal if someone stiffs me. I don't get tipped when I work only in the kitchen and manage the joint. I don't expect a tip then, and that job is more difficult than delivering. After I graduate college I'll be swimming in money, so I can live with the rubbish pay for now.

Once again, it's your job. There are a lot of folks who get paid crap for what they do, but you're not expected to tip them.

I do tip, but not because I want to. It actually deters me from ordering or eating out.

QFT

My point exactly, that's their job. Does this mean I should tip custodians, garbageman, and people who do their JOBS? I hate eating out esp when it's lousy service, I even got asked why I didn't tip a guy and on the fallowing night why I tipped another waiter 25%, simple, exemplary service. Tipping isn't a CUSTOM! It's a act of kindness. Sure some people pressure you and say "omg they don't get paid, they make a living off tip" well then they should learn to treat their clients kindly, because that is what ultimately decides the tip not the rule of 15-20% "customary" tip.

As for the poster who had to do things and not get reimbursed, can you tell me what kind of job you have? To deliver and having to walk up to the customers one by one and giving the plates that they delivered.

Yes, it's my job. And I often get paid $hit without tips for doing the lion's share of the work, which is part of the job. But in America, you tip waiters and delivery drivers... that's just they way it is. I mean, I tend to be a bit biased since I make money off tips, and can find ways to rationalize why people should tip me. I can't say that when I get a better job I won't change my mind back to your point of view.

i think a little bit differently..

i guess you work as a cook AND a delivery person. good, but those two are two different jobs.

if your work makes deliveries only, i guess it is part of the job.

if you dont get any allowance for gas, ask for reinbursement. if you dont get it, file a claim at a labor's department.

they dont HAVE to remember who ordered what. they just need to deliver and if something goes wrong, they can always phone the store but clearification. well, at least it usually works like that here.

Well, when the job description is to pre-prep the food, cook it, box it, manage orders, then deliver it... it's all one job regardless of traditional designations and differentiations between positions. That's just the way it goes. And the guy who owns the place does all the same work, plus manages inventory, and probably is losing money on the venture. But should we feel sorry for him: no, because he chose the job, and chose to be his own boss.

I suppose I could complain about the fact that the delivery driver makes more than the manager, even though the latter job is much more difficult.; but I don't. And you're right that I should ask for reimbursement for gas.

When a delivery driver gives me the wrong food, I set fire to his lawn!

Lighting a alcohol-soaked rag and stuffing it into his gas tank would be better, since I doubt most delivery drivers even have lawns.

You're right, I don't currently have a lawn.

You ever hear the joke by Mitch Hedberg? Someone asked him if he cared about being a household name, and he replied that most of his fans live in apartments. I forget the exact wording, but it's a classic joke.
