Yeh i think in terms of techical achievement the pm-3 is a clear step up but in regards to sound quality it would be hard to say which is better, its more a case of signature preference imo.

Is it really that hard to define which one is better if we're talking about resolution?

  dunno
in my point of view better resolution gives more "fun" to the sound

most people use the word 'fun' to describe a v-shaped sound signature, bass boost and treble emphasis.

better overall resolution depends on the headphone's driver. however, you can perceive a lot of little micro-details with a treble increase and that extra brightness also can give a sense of extra clarity and sharpness. a more balanced sound signature will help you pick up micro-details throughout the entire range of the frequency response.

so ya, detail resolution sometimes is hard to call. depends on the speed of the drivers, their ability to pick up higher resolution and low level-details... but also depends on frequency response and sound signature too.

it should be more than class above. There are many closed dynamic headphones in this price range, which have significant improvement over Momentum

I believe the discussion is in relation to the second gen Momentums, which are quite an improvement over the first. Sounds like you might be thinking about the first gen Momentum?

Yeah, you're right. Most reviews tell there is not so much difference
I guess, it should clarified by myself

I've not seen many reviews of the new Momentums, apart from Macedonian Hero's - he rated the sound a very significant improvement over the first gen Momentum (I agree with him). In any case, I now have both of these headphones, and will be borrowing some first gen Momentums, so will compare all three soon.

Yeah, he really seems to like them. To be honest the information about the Momentum 2's sonic capabilities of Headfi are pretty disappointing - there's barely any of it. 95% of the main thread is talking about the wireless BT connection rather than what they sound like. It's probably the first time where I've found Headfi to be fairly useless for assessing the sound of a new headphone.

This seems like a fairly accurate review. The mention about the treble being a little laid back should describe that fact that you still get all the detail, just without the harshness.

There's a bit of detail missing in the upper treble, but not so much that it's bothersome.

Typical geek review from a tech forum. I think he missed the mark on a few things. The reviews in this thread give a much more accurate description for potential buyers.

Just got my pair.

The packaging and presentation are top-notch.  The headphone is beautiful.

Just got my pair in about an hour ago. First impressions...these are some really nice sounding cans!! I've owned the pm-1, auditioned the pm-2 and now have the pm-3. After the first two, my expectations were pretty high. The pm-3 actually sounds a little better than what I'd hoped for. My only gripe, and it's a small one, is that there is a touch of hallowness in the mids. Hopefully with some time burning in the mids will flesh out a little. Then these will be about perfect.

Edit...switched from the x5 to the ifi micro and problem with the mids is now solved. Plus there is an xbass function on the ifi and once engaged the bass slam is just thunderous.
