Hi there,

I currently listen to my Denon D2000 headphones and love them. Source is FLAC flies played over the DAC in my Meier Cantate or a modded DAC-AH into the Cantate.

I listen to Rock and Metal music 99% of the time.

I'm just looking for an alternative to the D2000's. I definately want to keep the bass slam of the D2000's (tightened up a tad if possible) and I like the overall sound of the D2000's... but I would like something with a little more 'air' (a bigger soundstage?) to the sound. I feel a little boxed in with the D2000's at times.

Does anyone have any recommendations? I was thinking maybe the Beyer 990's?

Thanks for any advice

Paul

The DT990s should work out for you. I had a problem with the 250 ohm being amazingly sibilant but that's just me. It'd be worth giving the 600 ohm model a shot.

Yeah, I've not heard the Denons, but I've only heard them described as warm and smooth.  While the DT990 is an awesome pair of headphones, you are definitely NOT going to get nice, smooth sound.  If you do, make sure you go with the 600 ohm version.

Realistically, though, I'm not sure what to recommend if you want something open that's going to give you the luxurious bass that you get from the 990s.  There might be some Audio-Technicas that fit the bill, but you'd have to go way up the product line to get meaty bass.

99% rock and metal with bass slam of the D2000 - but open with a bigger soundstage and more air. Nope, FWIR, I can't think of any stock headphones that would fit this description better than a DT990 - which one should be the question.

Agreed. I've owned both the D2000s and DT990 and the D2000 is a bit more mellow than the DT990. Bass is tighter on the DT990 with similar slam. You definitely get a much larger soundstage and more detail than with the D2000s. They don't have the same sound but it's the closest I've heard to the D2000s.

How are the mids in comparison to the recessed mids of the D2000s?

Sorry, I honestly don't remember much about the mid range so I can't really say for sure. The mids on both cans are recessed though.
