Onkyo ND-S1 iPod dock
Jun 4, 2010 at 12:23 AM Post #151 of 256
I just ordered my Onkyo ND-S1. I'm in the US, but found very reliable ebayers from Japan (99%+ positive feedback) selling it for under $200 including expedited shipping. I'll be using it with my Ibasso D10 and Sennheiser IE8s. I can't wait to finally be able to conveniently use the DAC section of my D10 at home now without being at my PC. I've usually been using the amp section only via my Ipod Classic 7G LOD.

I'm very interested in this question as well. Does anyone know if CI Audio can tailor one of their PSU's for the Onkyo? I'd also love to hear if anyone could try and quantify the level of improvement an upgraded PSU like the Russ Andrews mentioned would bring. It's hard to justify spending as much or more on a power supply than the dock itself to the wife... O.O

I just setup my new Onkyo ND-S1 this morning...I am very impressed. I had been using my Ibasso D10 (first DAC/amp) for about a year now through either my desktop's or laptop's USB or through my iPod 160gb via LOD. I expected my setup to sound the same through Onkyo and bought it for the convenience of being able to use my D10's DAC anywhere in the house (had been using it with my Ipod via LOD for the majority of the time).

After setting up the Onkyo and listening, I was very surprised to hear a very significant improvement in SQ. The sound was much clearer and separation improved very noticeably. The sound also became more polished (closer to live) and I literally couldn't believe it was sounding that much better. Although I have loved my D10 (with HiFlight's latest topkit) for almost a year now, I had no idea it was quite this good. I am very impressed!

Would most of this improvement be due to superior jitter reduction from the Onkyo versus high jitter through my desktop's USB?

Welcome to Head-Fi
I have tried it with the iPod Touch 3G but there is a lot of problems with the ND-S1 and iOS4.

I have an Onkyo NR905 with Polks LSI Speakers, and I´m still trying to decide between the NS-D1 and the DS-A3 dock. Obviously I prefer to use the AVR audio processors, and go with the NS-D1.
I read that the problems are mainly with the new IOS4.1, and alsa that they dissapears with the IOS4.2....
My main concern is if the ND-S1 can work with G3 and G4 ipods touch doing the transport to the reciever. (and in this case I will pray in order to see the IOS problems solved)

Thank you again for the fast response!!

Chris where are you based?
If you're in EU there is a modified Aqvox that may be worth the extra cash.

Check it out.

Rosgr63,
I live in Argentina... I must import the product from EU, USA or Asia.
Thank you for the information on Aqvox. I will download the user manual to see it in detail.

Chris also email Aqvox as from what I can see they don't mention iPod touch 3G or 4G.
Best to email and double check first.
Good luck and let us know your decision.

Hi guys! It's my first post. If I'm playing 24bit flac on my laptop -> USB -> ND-S1 -> Optical -> DAC, will the DAC still recognize it as 24bit? Thanks!

Rosgr23,
Just recieved my ND-S1 (s), and connected to my ipod touch 4th Gen, 64Gb works like a charm.
I´m also using ZumoCast to stream flac files from my PC.

Great sound!

Regards

Chris
