I am late to this thread. Just heard about this product because it was an Amazon recommendation based on my other purchases. I am currently using a first generation FIIO X3, which I love, but I have always dreamed of being able to carry my entire music collection around. I only have about 280G of music in a combination of 320 MP3 and Apple Lossless.

I typically use some Klipsch ear buds or Sennheiser Pro 280 headphones. I've never really understood the attraction to the unbalanced outputs. Do you give up much quality by going with the Pioneer which only has the 3.5 jack? If they are otherwise identical and I don't want the expense of going unbalanced how much do you save getting the Pioneer. Any other differences or downsides?

With your headphones the Balanced won't make much of a difference. If you had some harder to drive phones like Audeze's or Hifimans it would be recommended.

I paid full retail from Onkyo for this which was 799.00, so for me it would be no difference really. I won't bother as there is no difference between the two except the internal memory. This is one of my favorite players otherwise.

Almost forgot the retail price of the DP-X1 when it officially landed in the US. Still would like to try this.

I have read that the SQ even better than the original one because it is built with better components I guess?!

Howdy,  please remember the glaring widespread battery issue, the problems with the both jacks breaking and the insufficient power for certain headphones are supposed to be solved with the updated model.  It should be able to drive more power hungry headphones without the need for an external amp or dac.  The battery drainage issue should be solved and the both jacks should be more robust.  I know time will tell for certain.  So please remember it in not just 32 gigabytes more of hard drive space.  It is worth it to me to spend money on one dap that is more expensive than to buy a slightly cheaper one that has many known issues.  The updated version is a bit above my budget, but I plan on saving slowly for it and let reviews come in and hope the price will drop some as well.  I would rather pay more once than buy multiple daps with quality control issues or pay to send it in for warranty regularly.

The DX200 is coming soon and I'm sure will be way under 1000. I'm not a fan of all these 1000 to 4000 dollar MP3 players, it's absolutely ridiculous to pay that amount.
Also, I'm happy to say I've had none of the aforementioned issues you describe and I have had mine for 5 months already. I'm not dissing this in anyway, I just hate seeing these prices skyrocketing for minor changes!

Thank you for clarifying your point.  A grand or more for me is a massive chunk of my budget.  I agree with your point.  I don't want to spend more money than necessary on a dap.  Sounds like I might be better off getting an original DP-X1 if a lot of people haven't had the the problems.  Would the original DP-X1 power the Audeze EL-8 and Sine on ear and the Ultrasone Edition 8 pretty well?

Not sure if it can power the Audezes that you mentioned but it powers my Oppo PM3s with no issues which does not require to much power. I almost always use my DP-X1 with my Alclair RSM CIEMs, an amazing match. 
If you buy the player from a reputable seller like Onkyo them self, then you have a year warranty if an issue surfaces. My only concern is the jacks, my battery lasts a LONG time, I can work a 12 hour shift and have plenty of battery left.  If i where you I would pick the EL8 over the Sine, or you could try the PM3 like I have and its a Planar headphone like the EL8 and you can go the PM3 thread and probably get on the tour and try it for a week free (minus postage to the next member). Here is a pic of the PM3 with the DP-X1 also my Ifi Micro, they are not hooked together, just pic I have on here.

Thanks!  I feel better about buying the current DP-X1.  Sounds like I have something to save for.  It will most likely be next year before I buy it unless  some generous family member(s) were to buy it for me for Christmas.  I am saving for new eyeglasses and a new computer currently.

If you bought one now from the USA, one would have to assume you would get the latest revision, so the odds should be in your favor.
