The issue with third-party apps has already been documented extensively, did you purchase this device with that in mind?
I do believe it is a software fault (as the stock player has no issues) and that Onkyo may be working on a fix on that in conjunction with their work on implementing MQA capability, thus please do not think of it as a deal breaker.
In the meantime, I would advise you to set the gain on the player to 'low gain'
This in no way eliminates the issue, but it at least reduces the apparent distortion to much lower levels, such that it is near undetectable on most tracks.
(You'd possibly need a very sensitive IEM like the Empire Ears Zeus and/or very sensitive ears to pick up on such low levels of distortion on some tracks.)
While this is in no way a solid fix for the issue, it is a decent workaround for Tidal users until Onkyo manages to fix the issue.
Many thanks Zenifyx - I did try low gain and could still hear the distortion, although it could be that setting would be more bearable for day to day use. Re: The purchase decision, I suspect like many others I ordered my DP-X1 well before Christmas when the reports around Tidal were very isolated (they still are, many people such as Sonic Defender above have no issues - P.S. ty SD for the kind words). Part of posting here was adding another data point to the side that do hear issues, so people don't think it is restricted to one or other listening setup. Anyway, fingers crossed for a solution one day soon - sure I will still get plenty of enjoyment from the default app!
Hi Nonnynoo
I bought my DP-X1 predominantly for a Tidal use as well.
It works beautifully most of the time, but I have also noticed the odd drop-out mid-song (probably less than half a second but obviously annoying). I found that switching the Onkyo off and then back on solves the problem. It doesn't happen often, so I expect the software glitch will be sorted out at some stage, but I offer this straightforward solution.
I'm not getting any distortion or hiss.
5ghz wifi sometimes hard to pick up. I had assumed this was the Android OS (I'm an iPhone person so not an expert on Android).
Overall, the balanced output with Tidal (I tend to download albums for offline listening on the move) sounds fantastic and I'll forgive them the odd glitch as long as they listen to customers and look into it.
