I know it'll never happen, but I hope that they release some form of source code so that some curious X3 owners can try to fix some issues for themselves. As we've seen with Rockbox, even if a product is discontinued, there'll still be a loyal following that would be more than willing to develop firmware for the device. I feel like if Fiio releases the source code behind the X3 firmware, all album art, Replay Gain, .m4a tagging, and other miscellaneous issues would be worked out by the X3 community.

My general sense is that some of the code is licensed and cannot be put out in the public domain

If the software is truly modular, they can release the UI-related code and a basic SDK to the public domain keeping everything else as proprietary blobs.

Yup. I wouldn't rush to grab this. Nothing seems changed to me. .m4a genre still incorrect, song title still show file name…

Agreed! Did a quick comparison and it looks like some work has gone into refining the highs.
YMMV though.

The highs, exactly. But did some more testing and in a whole 3.34b still sounds better.
