so you recommend X3 over ziku x9?!
I cant even use the X9 so its not fair to compare but functions and speed wise, definitely the rockboxed X3

Using the Ziku HD-X9 and this is a really good dap for the cost. Built very well, sounds great and reads all my tags no problem. Volume is around 52 for my 32 ohm earbuds.

Congrats on your purchase. I had updated to the V1.101.10 (2017) firmware and the X9 went too loud after that. I could not go past volume level 1 or 2 with my IEMs as it gets too loud. Gladly there is a V1.101.10 (2018) firmware (available on Russian forum) which brought it back to the original volume setting.

Thanks, I did download some software but cannot tell which one. Player says V1.101.10 2017-11-07

If you are mainly listen to IEMs, I would advise to keep the original firmware as it gives an option to fine tune the volume. The other f/w version will be useful to someone who uses headphones which requires more power. Also I find it bit dangerous(with high sensitive IEMs) because the volume jump is quite high on a single turn-click of the wheel.

It looks like there's a 1.15 beta firmware out now (dated March 18, 2019). No English changelog of course, so there's no way to know for sure what it does. Good luck getting any answers from Hidizs about their firmware updates. I'm honestly surprised that 1.15 exists, since 1.12 remained in beta for nearly a year.

Here's the Google Translate result of the Chinese changelog included in the file:
Modify the content:

1. Fix not supporting individual 192k music files
2. Fix the clock in the system settings, but the screen is still showing the problem.
3. Increase the option to select the font size in the system settings.
4. Fix known bugs

Known bugs seems to cover a ridiculous array of possibilities. It's a great adventure! I can say that they still don't allow the user to disable automatic database updates, and the clock does in fact turn off when it's told to. The font size does change, and the menu options scroll instead of just remaining cut off. So, good things, overall.
