New TOL A&K DAP : the AK Ultima SP1000

DO NOT use a balanced adapter. You will/could damage your player. You need a balanced cable to your headphones/IEMs to use the balanced output.

If unbalanced is well designed (and on A&K players it is), it will be similar in quality to balanced. It may sound slightly different. Whether it's better or not wiil depend on your preferences. However, if you're having a problem driving your headphones with enough power, using a balanced cable to the balanced output could/should improve sound quality significantly.

Does that then mean that for situations where more power is needed the balanced output is better, but if volume and sound quality are already good, balanced effect is minimal and mainly offers a difference in SQ that is different not necessarily better?

:) My SP1K sounds better in balanced out to my iem's. In fact, I've had three AK's and each has sounded better in balanced out to a variety of iem's. Is single-ended good? Yes. To my ears, balanced out is better. Do you HAVE to run balanced? No.

Thank you. That gives me encouragement to make the investment in a balanced cable to try it out.

Now another question: The sp1000m comes with plastic protector stick ons for the front screen and back. There is also a leather case that covers the back but not the front screen.
I have an iPhone, and i've not needed to get a screen protector because the glass is very strong and doesn't scratch easily. Is the glass front of the sp1000 as strong and scratch resistant as the iPhone, or is it wiser to put on at least the screen protector? Thanks.

Is there a way to hide the songs in artist view? When I select an artist, the player lists all the the albums and all the songs in the albums. Is there a way to only list albums and not songs? It seems like this should be possible, but I can't find any settings nor any information about this.

Hey folks,

I am wanting to run SE100 into an amp

https://www.aliexpress.com/item/Dil...I-HIFI-Decoder-RCA-AES-Input/32831715617.html

What cable to run from A&K to coax in.....or optical?
Noob at this so any help would be appreciated

The only digital out on the SE100 is the digital USB out. You could connect via the USB-C or use the analog 3.5mm or 2.5mm and enable the line out in the menu.

Looking at pics of the amp, then USB audio out would probably be the best bet. You would connect via USB to the amp. After you connect, you would swipe down from the top to bring up the quick settings. You should see External USB lit up. You would then press on External USB and you should see below the words USB Digital appear which lets you know the player is outputting USB audio.

Thank you Jason!

I have fallen in love with my A&K and want it to be the front end of whatever I use. Good stuff! Thank you :)

Jason... any chance there's gonna be a change to the UI to NOT have to see every track in each album when selecting Artist/Album? Would be much better to be able to scroll the albums and only see the tracks for each album by selecting it, and then go into another menu level. As it is... if you have multiple albums for a single artist... it's sometimes a very long list to scroll through to find the album you're looking for.

Would also be highly desirable to have an option to sort the Artist/Album list by album release date rather than alphabetically.

Thanks.

Not sure. It's been requested a lot and always near the top of my list that I submit to the development team regularly with a list of features users are looking for. It's also personally one of the features that I would love to see added. Development has been primarily focused on the Open App service, MQA and Roon for the rest of this year, but I will definitely pass this along again.

@JasonNYC qobuz is quite unstable. Maybe I could ask you to forward this issue to your developer team: suddenly, the screen starts flickering and my spk reboots. It happens also in a regularly basis that without a reboot qobuz refuses playing files. Thank you.
