[New] Philips Fidelio X1

BTW, do you think the TH600 makes the X1 redundant?  The X1 is sort of a poor-mans TH600, so I'm keeping it in the meantime.  I now the X1 is warmer sounding, but they both have some "U" shape to them with nice soundstages.

Not that you were asking me but I have owned both the X1 and the TH600, granted at different times. The TH600 for me does not justify the cost. While if the X1 fits it is a wonderful value. Comparing them is hard, especially from memory. But I personally would say if you love the X1 stick with it for your fun can and buy more music to enjoy. In comparing the TH600 to the Denon AH-D line I stuck it ever so slightly above the 5000. But I think the 5000 was the best value closed fun headphone. That was when you could get them for a decent price though, now since being discontinued they are much less a value sadly.

Maybe slightly more than 7, but yeah somewhere around there.  The K712 has just slightly more bass than the Anniversary.

Is there anything in particular your wondering about in a comparison?
Because...  http://www.head-fi.org/t/623013/new-philips-fidelio-x1/2805#post_9848747

I'm also looking at the K812 after tax refund season.  I've owned the HD800 and K702 65th among others, though had to sell the HD800 because I needed the money.  I'm considering pulling the trigger on the X1 told hold me over as I'm currently full size headphone-less at the moment.  Would you say it's on a similar level to the K702 65th/K712?  I'm trying not spend more than $300 right now.

I wish there was a closed variant of X1 that had similar sound characteristics, of course soundstage would take a hit though but yea. Have any1 rebelled and tested making X1 into closed by covering the backside? :p Unfortunately I need closed headphone but I like the described & measured frequency response of it.

A bit curious to pick one up to mod it, not maybe entirely closed but leave a small part opened like the circle part and cover the rest to make the opening smaller for better isolation.

How about a pair of Mad Dogs?

Got the Aune X1. Imo, it improves the soundstage width over E17 and the mid becomes fuller, so the bass didn't overpower it. The bass somehow becomes even more controlled, maybe even reduced the qty. No change with the hi.
Nothing major from E17, so yes its an overkill for the fidelio X1, but at 140usd, its just 20usd more than E17. Its also for my long term use.
The store, which also an AKG authorized re-seller said around mid nov or early december, will receive the AKG K712&812.

Yeah, they're pretty close and on a similar level.  The K712 is a tad more refined and balanced, and the X1 is more "fun."

Which has better separation, the HD650s or the X1? Also, which would sound less congested with proper amplification?

One of these are going to be my first audiophile headphones :D

The HD650 is certainly more intimate sounding, so even though the HD650 has separation there's less room for it to work with than on the X1.

I'd love to pick up a X1 just to test and compare to the Fischer Audio FA-011 limited edition I have. Seems similar on tonal balance.

I tried putting my hands over mine just now. It was like going at least halfway to Sibilant Hell.

Update: I tested with a pair of folded t-shirts (regular American Apparel fine jersey, for reference), with no better results. They got kind of boomy as well.

I'll see if I can something more foam-like, but I think the mesh has to go to fix the sibilance and... I may be bored from waking up at 7 on a Sunday morning, but I'm not going that far. :)

Thanks, If I can get the K712 for the $325 offer I put in, I'll probably get it, otherwise the X1 is looking good for now.  The K712 is just more of a known quantity for me since I've owned the 65th, though I am always interested to try new things so I can give feedback to the community.

Speaking of comparisons...

I think I want a pair of closed backs that are more complementing than similar to these sound wise. I was thinking about the MDR-1R, but they seem to be even more laid back and I want something a little more forward. Momentum over-ear, maybe?

(And, aesthetically, I'd say the brown Momentum would make a very nice pair hanging beside the X1)
