New Hifiman Headphone HE-400 is out

I'm sure we've all experienced something along those lines.  It's just a matter of relations and your ears getting used to a sound signature.  I could just as easily say 'I bought Q701s coming from HE-400 and I find the upper-mids and treble exaggerated.'  I could also say 'I bought the AD700 coming from the apple buds and it sounds like a bass cannon.'

In comparison to the Q701, the upper mids aren't as pronounced, that much is certain, but it is by no means lacking. You just have to get used to the signature change.

So, you're saying the HE400s can match the detail of the Q701s?  That is basically my only concern at this point.

Definitely. From my audition experience the Q701s have a bright treble, but HE400s have just as much detail in the treble just presented in a significantly more natural way. It also has so much more bass detail than the Q701s.

After a few days of burning in, feel the sound of the HE-400s is now opening up.
The harshness in the treble region is now reduced significantly and the sound is much more smoother now. Although, I miss the treble of my Fostex T50RPs. Also, the black background presented by the T50RPs is missing in the HE-400s.

One strange observation I have is that the HE-400s are sounding much better out of my laptop's headphone out rather than through my iBasso D-12 headamp. May be, iBasso is not able to provide sufficient current to drive these Orthos(??).

Any suggestion for a high current class A desktop amplifier?

I am looking to upgrade from my sr80i's, and I heard these were similar to Grado's, just with more bass, better soundstage, as well as better sound all around. The question is, can I run them off of an iPod 5.5G with a FiiO E11, or will I need to upgrade my amp as well? The decision has mainly come down to these or the sr325i's, though I thought I would branch out from the Grado family tree, not wanting to fall too far from it though, as I do love my sr80i's. I listen to mostly Classic Rock, although many genres will be thrown at it, including some classical and a little bit of alt rock.

That would be a decent combo. They sound really good actually from my ipod and an e17...similar.

So yeah, it would work.

Do the 400's make you miss your 5k's at all yet? Sonically of course, we know their comfort isn't easily matched!

I bought the d5k as a complement to the he400. I wanted something closed comfortable and fun. The d5k did all those things and more. And then...there was the modded fostex t50.

I auditioned lots of other headphones (LFF Paradox, AKG Q701, AudioTechnica AD900, HD800s, Denon D5000+full lawton mod) and compared them to the HE400s, if anyone wants my opinions on those I'd be glad to share it while my memory is still fresh.

Hi, would love to hear your opinion comparing to the AD900 as that is what I own and am interested in buying the HE400.

What was the modded D5K like compared to the 400? Low-end wise too.

Hm it had a noticeable but not big recess in the mids compared to the HE400 and other planar cans. More importantly it had a fairly artificial tinny somewhat sharp treble that really offset the timbre. The bass sounded comparable to HE400, maybe a bit more in quantity but not as much as powerful or authoritative as LCD2s.
