RushN and I both put the hd650 and he400 to the test. He ended up with the he400 and I chose the hd650. It's all about preference and what you personally find musical, engaging and enjoyable. I personally have found that I like a very dark signature and the hd650 delivers this well. I appreciate it's technical abilities and supreme comfort. I also give homage to the hd650's ability to scale up so well with better amps. 
 
I do miss the he400 and regret that I never got to try it with the lyr and bf. I know that I wouldn't like the he400 r3 though. It's hot treble would be too much for me. Maybe there will be an r4 or I'll just buy an r2 when I have a little extra money.

Got the rev 3 version by looking at the sandy color of the insides and the cable are still canare ones, not sure if it's exactly the same as previous revisions though....
 
Side note : damn they are heavy! The clamping force made me stretch the headband as per suggestion, hope it will give some flexibility

Don't worry. Just keep gently stretching that headband to get the desired clamp. It only took me one time!! Then the clamp was perfect. You think they're heavy? You should try the he500 or lcd2!!

I'm thinking the HE400s will win overall, but the HD600s were to complement my DT880s by providing a warmer sound but still be able to keep up with faster music. I don't do a whole lot of classical/acoustic listening but I can appreciate a rich, romantic sound. The DT880s just sound a bit thin sometimes. I'd like some density to my music at night, to lull me to sleep.

I might just try out the Lyr someday, hell I guess I could 15-day it, but it seems like it would take a while to find a cheaper one on FS.

It's really identical in sound to rev2 except the treble. rev3 has a somewhat brighter treble (something like 3 dB higher than before if I have to guestimate), which allows treble detail in music to really pop, but at the same time is really unforgiving on vocals; any vocals that are poorly recorded/mastered will sound fairly grained. Overall balance is still balanced but no longer the "dark" signature people might come to expect.
 
The issue is that because HE400s naturally have a very tilted treble response, in that lower treble is subdued, mid-treble is moderate, and upper treble is really emphasized, the overall raise in brightness though not drastic is enough to make the upper treble a bit too much, causing the grain in vocals to pop. It's really hard to ignore for those like me who are sensitive to grain in music but others may very well not be able to pick it up.

Anyone else have a problem with sibilance on the HE 400?. I get plenty of it on a few songs with my HE 400, do you think my O2 is responsible. Treble on my HE 400 has more sibilance than my D5ks, it is really beginning to bother me.

Do you have the new rev3 version? If so then yeah, it has treble issues; I already talked with the Hifiman rep over in the customer service thread hoping they could recognize this and do something. Do come and also post about your experience with the treble here so we have more backing:

Most songs really. I think my O2 might be adding to the sibilance. The E17 is much better, and with the e17 the Denons have more sibilance. Weird. Maybe I am just imagining things.

I have the rev 2s though, the drivers are white.
