Just a small comment: perceived sound leakage is reliant not only on volume but on background noise, and actually reveals differences your mind normally tells you not to pay attention to. By this test, two different "quiet" rooms can have extremely different sound levels. In a room where a little street noise makes it through the windows, the air conditioner is blowing, someone is chatting quietly in the corner, and the computer fan is blowing, sound leakage will be inaudible even a few feet away, even from a Grado. In a room with none of these sounds, people will be able to hear any open headphone from twenty feet away.

But that said, unless the OP works at a library or morgue, he was probably listening at dangerously high volumes. It's a normal temptation upon first getting really good headphones.
