Interesting take. I find the opposite regarding clarity. The W5000 is more clear. For very quick and defined passages I have found the W3000ANV to lack clarity. I don't mean to say that it sounds bad. I just feel that the W5000 provides greater clarity. The W3000ANV seems to have a much greater quantity of natural reverb. Sounds fantastic for lots of music. But can make things a little hazy on occasion.

And actually, for clarity I would typically just use an open headphone.

I found the W5000s had more clarity over a small band of the treble...the W3000s across most of the spectrum. No doubt had I assumed the W3000s sounded like the W5000s I never would have touched them; let alone plunked down $1k for them.

Headfonia's review is up. http://www.headfonia.com/wooden-kings-w1000x-w3000anv-and-w5000/

I find Mike's reviews to be confusing. I heard the W1000X and the W5000 off the EC Balancing Act. I believe the W1000X had more bass.

the w5000 sounded clearer than the w3000anv to me from the bottom end all the way through the midrange, but it also had more midrange glare. the w3000anv's treble is exquisite - detailed and delicate. i think that it may extend further than the w5000 but i'm not sure. all i know is that i prefer it. if you like your rock soft with middle-age spread, then the w3000anv should take you down the hard road in the level of comfort that you've become accustomed to.

Yeah, while I've only listened to the W5000 for maybe 20 minutes total, I thought its reputation as being weak in bass quality, control and quantity was warranted.

well i spent more time with it than that and while i agree that the w5000 is bass-lite, i acclimated to it soon enough and didn't find it wanting. where i disagree is with regard to its bass quality, which remains the most articulate and textured that i've heard from any headphone. but we all hear differently as they say.

That is one badly rolled off bass response. Wow.
