Why didn't that come to my mind! You really should buy it! =D As off-topic, really sucks, the deal with Stax. Not having high hopes of the products still being produced in Japan... = / At least we all still have Audio-Technica.

This link explains the benefits of DC coupled vs AC coupled.  I was advised that if you don't hear a 'pop' when you turn the amp. on, then you can use DC coupled inputs without damaging your headphones.

That's what I was told by the head of a company that builds amplifiers.  Now whether or not you can hear differences between the two is a whole other question!  I'm not sure that I hear any real differences myself.

I'm still not sure how a headphone can be called great sounding and weird sounding in the same sentence.  What makes it "weird" per se?  I was so tempted to order the Kuboten review pair the other day, but I'll be spending all my time with the SR-009 now and I don't need any weird headphones.  I thought my old W11R were too nasal sounding and colored in the upper mids, and a friend's pair of W5000 I heard were thin and bright sounding.  So, this is one phone I should never buy without hearing it first.

Think of it as a closed Grado RS-1 that's all growed-up. I'm pretty allergic to stuff with unsmooth frequency response or lower treble ringing, but this one manages to pull it off. The question for me was if this can had enough bass to offset the wierd mids, and from reading this thread, it did, so I took the jump.

I think what people mean by "weird" is that some aspects of the sound don't sound quite natural or right.

There aren't a lot of good closed headphones out there. Not sure if there's anything better than the W3000ANV among closed headphones in current production.

I personally like them. The SR-009 are certainly better, but they're open.

The R10 would be a good example. I think it sounds wierd, and awesome.

Right, it's good to have a closed headphone for certain times.  Several of us compared my LA7000 to Ray's R10 at the 2009 Colorado meet, and we thought the R10 were only a little better - mostly with stronger and tighter bass, richer vocals, and bigger soundstage.  But the LA7000 carried themselves very well in comparison, and after 2.5 years I still have no plans to part with them. The mids and highs of my LA7000 compare the closest to those of my HE-500, although the bass is not as fast and controlled as my HE-500 it still fairly rich and enjoyable.

See, I don't think the R10 sound weird, it was the W11R or W5000 (or CD3000) that sounded weird to me.

Certain colorations aren't everyone's cup of boat, nor do they float everyone's tea. The W3000ANV are the closest to mass appeal though, save for maybe the W10LTD which next to nobody is going to get to hear nowadays. Honestly, if you don't like the W3000ANV, I can't see any other Audio-Technica creation having appeal. Best to look elsewhere.

hi  can someone write a full- review of w3000anv compared to w1000x ?   Any more bass ? or wider  soundstage ? easier to drive ?  which one better for "monitoring"  ?

I could but I'm too busy listening to my ATH-W3000ANV. xD

This thread contains some comparing though. Main point is probably the lesser bass quantity compared to ATH-W1000X, but everything else is superior in my opinion. = )

Speaking of colorations, i'm guessing that the W3000ANV is less colored than the L3000? Which of the 2 do you prefer?
