New Beyerdynamic T5p 2nd generation

Gen 2 is miles ahead of gen1 in most departments: frequency curve, portability, case, cable and durability!
One could think that the pads of gen1 were better, but their price nowadays is insane and with Dekoni and the likes there are so many options to choose from pad wise.

Wait another 2 years when your gen2 pleather headpads and earpads turn to flakes before you say durability. I bought a pair of T5p gen2 earpads for my GMP 8.35d 2 years ago and now the pleather flakes off. The genuine leather of my T5p gen 1 (bought in 2015) pads remains in good condition.

Also, avoid the Dekoni pads which have square cross section. The stock pads have round cross section and a curved inward facing surface. The Dekoni pads will completely mess up the sonic imaging of the T5p, which is the best attribute of the headphones.

Personally I haven't had any issues with any pleather pad of any Beyerdynamic I have had (wow that's a mouthful!) but I have seen photo's about flaking.
Regarding the Dekoni pads: Finding the right one is always a challenge, for any headphone and the stock pads are what they are for a very good reason. The choice leater pads are the first I truely like for the T5p and tried many. Best replacement pad I found were the pleater mmx-300/custom pro pads but in the end ymmv and taste is personal, best part of the hobby :)

One of the reasons why I use earpads protectors on all of my headphones. They improves the wearing comfort too. Using them from Greekia btw, not from other sketchy materials.

I managed finding these lamb skin pads from a taobao seller in China the other day. I shall receive the pads next week and have those installed to my GMP 8.35d Mobile, replacing the flaked T5p gen2 pads.

Base on my experience, these pads shall eventually find their way to Amazon and ebay in a few months.

The problem with pleather pad is once they begin flaking, they will leave black tiny flakes on your faces and hair, giving you real "cosmetic" problem. So you are pretty much having no choice but replacing them.

Let us know what you think of them. I'm looking to replace the pads on my pair.

a question regarding pads I haven't been able to find the answer to here; do the DT1770 pads fit the 2nd gen T5p?

How do they sound? They look quite different in real life, looking at the backside of the pads.

Almost sounding the same, except the sheep kin pads lose out a bit sub bass as they are a tiny bit more loose fitting. They are on my 8.35d though.

Just for reference...

I purchased some Accessory House Fostex sheepskins from Amazon...and these are the most uncomfortable pads I have ever used. They foam they use is very stiff -- my ears start to hurt after 10 or so minutes of use. They do not alter the sign signature of the headphone though.

I also purchased a set of Dekoni (Choice Leather) for my T5p...and those are the most comfortable pads I have ever used. They are so soft. Isolation is good with these. I think (if not imagining things) that the mid-bass was boosted a bit.

Hello everyone, looking for some advice please.

I have the opportunity to get a used T5p (in like-new condition, store demo pair) or new DT1770 for the same price.

Most of my listening is classic rock like ZZ Top and Van Halen, but also a fair amount of electronic music like Lorde and Daft Punk, as well as Peter Gabriel and piano/voice singer songwriters like Tori Amos, etc. I also dabble in early Miles Davis and Grant Green, and some bluegrass, as well. I like forward mids and lots of detail, but also need decent bass. I like fun headphones and don’t need clinical accuracy.

I have been a huge Grado fan for the past ten years but need a closed set in my current situation. My Grados are 325 for music and SR80 for TV and gaming. I’ve also recently made the switch from vinyl and tube amps to high res files and a DAP.

As for Beyers, I’ve owned DT770s in the past and really liked them, and my current headphones are Custom One Pros. I’m enjoying the COPs but kind of want to jump to my “endgame” set and am looking at T5p or DT1770 (other contenders are the 177X Go and Shure 1540).

My source is a Fiio M11 Pro.

So, should I go for the used T5p or the new 1770? Something else like the 1540 or 177X?

Thanks! :)
