New Beyerdynamic T5p 2nd generation

Feb 23, 2018 at 5:37 PM Post #1,171 of 1,976

I would like to emphasis the update to the Beyerdynamic balanced cables with 2,5mm jack. The sound improvement is like putting the T5p2 to another level. I made extensive tests today with my other pair in the office. Of course I also tried switching the cables to see if one of the T5p2s has a problem.
But the result is beyond doubt: Balanced is way better. I cannot listen with the stock cable any more and immediately ordered another balanced cable.
Highly recommended.
Anybody else who did the comparision?

Can you tell me where you ordered the cable ? Thanks in advance !

So that headphones you bought and raved about are now unbearable that "you cannot listen with the stock cable" anymore ?! Yes balanced the T5p are better and yes they scale but the base of these is top notch to begin with.

Of course:
Go to beyerdynamic Homepage, press the search button and look for "718106"
I tried on the US and EU site. It worked on both.
Please let me know if on your equipment the differences are as big. Thanks

What can I say. Yes it is true. When I got my first T5p2 (used, therefor burned in), I listened for two weeks without the balanced cable (didn't have it) and yes, it was better than anything I heard before and I was super happy. But now - 2 weeks later - after the comparision, I just don't like it with the stock cable at all any more, since I know how much it improves with the balanced cable. I start to focus on the not so nicely controled reproduction ... in comparision. Call me extreme, but subjectively it is like that. Would I still be fine if I wouldn't have tried the balanced cable? Of course. What you don't know cannot bug you.
Whenever I find something clearly better sounding I don't like the old ones any more. Had the same with X7 vs. my for 2 years higly appreciated X5s. Sold them the day I held the X7 in my hands. In order to save my budget I have not tried the X7 II yet. :).

Got my second balanced cable today.
After further comparisions I am at the point where I think all headphone comparisions should be done again "balanced". Only that way you can see the headphones true potential.
I cannot believe the improvement on the T5p2. I started to listen to lots of my music collection and I am amazed about every piece. Classical, Soul, Jazz, Pop, Country - way better in any genre (that I like).
"Goodbye My Lover" from James Blunt almost made me cry myself. It was like sitting in the audience myself.
Of course I will keep looking for even better (balanced driven) headphones but I can hardly believe they exist.

I have been trying to convince myself (for some time now) that I don't need to upgrade from my DT150's. I have read through a bunch of threads and one of them brought me to this one. So my question is, would the T5p2 be a significant upgrade from my DT150's? I can get these for £400, so they are just affordable for me.

I will mostly be playing these though my Audiolab M-DAC headphone output. My portable rigs mostly serve my earbud collection.

Sorry for quoting myself. Anyone able to advise?

Of course it will be, you are comparing 130€ HP to 1000€ HP lol.
There is already a huge difference between dt 1770 and t5p...

Yeah, I know it sounds like a stupid question, but prior to the DT-150's, I had a relatively cheap pair of Sony closed HPs and I didn't find that to be much of an upgrade. Just want to be sure my hard earned cash isn't wasted on a pointless upgrade :-)

Has anyone tried the T5p 2nd gen with the Dekoni beyer DT series earpads? Do they fit, and alter the sound in any way?
Got the pleather memory pads yesterday. They isolate a bit better. Comfort is better and don't alter the sound much. Got about 2 hours on them. Need some more time for a more detailed analysis.

thanks guys for taking the time to respond

so overall , if say my main genre is hip hop and trap and rap , and i just want the perfect and the most comfortable headphone for these genres , which one of them would you suggest ?
t5p 2nd gen, t1 2nd gen and first gen, t90 , hd650
also i have to say that i dont want that big or boomy bass , so im not looking for some headphone like beats that just gives extra bass , i just want the perfect headphone for the hip hop and trap , i really dont care that it has that big amount of bass , just the right amount

which one should i go for guys ?

also i have FiiO E10 amp and i dont have extra cash for another amp , so for example if you say HD650 is the right choice right now , can my amp drive it ?
personally i found acoustic, hip hop and well recorded rock sound the best on HD650. as far as volume is your concern FiiO E10 is good enough to drive 650, but it's not ideal. i upgraded that E10 to SMSL sanskrit 6th gen plus Asgard 2 to really make hd650 to shine. but please always remember that AMP/DAC upgrade is never as obvious as the headphone upgrade. also HD650 is pretty flat and mostly honest to the sound source, so when the recording has more bass it will show it. overall the bass is raised by a tiny bit to make the signature of the headphone warm. but it's no where near boomy. it's very well controlled punchy bass. some people complained the HD650 bass is one note, but I hear every single bass guitar notes from Michael Jackson's Human Nature. out of all the Beyer lineup, i'd only personally try t5p because it's the least treble dominant can. hope that helps

Please let us know about the sonical changes due to the new pads. I am also considering to get them since the original ones are not comfortable for me when listening more than 1-2 hours.

So far: sound didn't change but the better seal makes it's purpose a bit better. Pads are comfortable but 'hotter' than stock. The weight distribution differs making me adjust the headphones more (comfort issue? don't really know yet). I do like them better than the stock pair.
I'm hunting sites to find the real leather pads now and ordered the fenestrated pads for my DT880s. Don't think the fenestrated will work with the T5p's but I will giver them a go when they arrive.
