Further testing.. hey Its july 4th holiday and I am free.. lol
Tested with lots of headphones and I think the beryllium driver sound more planar than dynamic. Bass is super fast, tight and bass never bloat or muddy. Its deep and fast. Planar sound like that. the H95 tuning is more hifiman's Ananda and Arya than XS or X. I also had the hifiman R9 and I didnt like the tuning as the vocal is pretty recessed more U shape. I am returning the R9.
Further testing confirm that the R9 famous deep bass is still not as deep as H95. The quatity is about the same (H95 slightly more) but does not goes as deep and the H95 is faster. I bought the R9 for its bass per review. To be honest, if the R9 is fine by itself, but my itchy hands can't stop a/b-ing between the 2 and it pales in comparison to H95. from the low to the very high, the R9 roll of faster and bass not as deep.
I am testing the H95 wire direct to the dac and not BT. The BT would not stand a chance to compete with any mid tier audiophile phone. For comparing BT, it's in the league of a regular ANC BT phone like sony XM5 and Apple Airpod Max (still the H95 came out ahead - not tested the ML 5909). The H95 has the deepest bass of all and has the clearest vocal and the widest sound stage. I think the Sony xm5 won in the mid bass slam but its too warm and the bass unfortunatelty bleed well into the mids. - not a fan with these tuning.
I would say for sennheiser fan like the HD800/HD820, the sony xm5 would be more similar tuning- good and strong mid bass slam, warm and vocal pretty sharp and roll off high to prevent peak. For hifiman's Arya/ ananda fans, the H95 will be their eqauilivant tuning - deeper bass, vocal superbly clear and high extending all the way up. Its a more relax tuning but it won't slam like the sony xm5.
I think the H95 is one ANC phone that can cross over to the mid tier "audiophile" range (only with direct wire connect to the DAC). The advantage is the H95 can be mobile and not stuck on to the desk like the Arya with an desktop amp. The H95 connects direct to the DAC from mobile USC C and then uses its internal Amp to drive it. It sound really good walking around without a traditional amp. Too bad, the cell phone battery dies withing an 1.5 hr.
I added a custom leather headphone band bought more tahn 10 years ago for my LCD 3 (1st edition). The H95 hurt a little on my head.
