Next step is MSB DISCRETE with dual psu configuration

WD has no clock input. Clock doesn’t bring any downgrade to r7…

Which last part

If you got your DI-20 close to the date of the last device firmware, flash V4.076. It made a gigantic difference for S/PDIF input on both my DI-20s.

Interesting, I just got the DI20HE ca. 3 weeks ago and was advised to install V4.075. Probably the older one, right? and I assume the "meow cat" version aka V4.076 was installed when sent out... BUT didn't work hence Jos adviced to use V4.075. no desktop pc but streamer, maybe that's why?

I use r7he mk2 with external clock aune sc1pro (linear power supplied) and Rockna net as source through i2s. I know it’s really high quality sound. just r7he mk2 without clock outplayed Rockna wd signature by timbre, weighted sound, more layered in depth soundstage and micro dynamic…
With clock it’s on the same detail level now. But… which dac can be next step? May be someone passed this way earlier…

I think you are right here, but if you can try it for free I would! - spdif input ....What i2s cable do you use?

Ok I think you are already set. MSB Discrete may not even be the next step. Jump(try) to the Premier if you have good money.

that was my thoughts from the beginning - I should make big money step up to gain in quality. Anyway it was 3 options on my mind but I'm not sure it's upgrade - cen.grand dsd dac 1 and holo may lv2/kte or aqua formula

I just saw the NET has usb! - you should definitly try the DI20HE with USB. Return it within 14 days, money return. Arrange it with a seller Im sure you will have the opportunity.

DI20HE gives the separations more authority. With the Tubulus cable(to R7) I can only imagine how great it will sound!
