The LCD3 are truly awesome. Everything that was said about them at CanJam was true.
Unfortunately, the left driver on my replacement pair just died. I don't know whether to laugh or cry.

Sorry to hear that.

I have always thought that an unveiled LCD3 can give the 007 a good run for its money considering it's a lot easier to build a setup around it and it sounds decent out of a portable amplfier like the Fostex HP-P1. Now if only the thing is more comfortable to wear...

So, just to clarify. Auduz'e brought veiled/defective LCD-3s to the Irvine meet right after Canjam? I only ask because Purrin's old pair was supposed to have sounded the same, according to Anax (and some others I don't remember). I also thought LCD-3s were a zillion miles away from the mighty Stax, according to the Stax crowd, but now it's somewhat close to the O2? Purrin's sudden approval of the LCD-3 is perplexing to say the least for someone following his comments since the Irvine meet thread, and the lambasting that occured in Skylab's review thread. Of course the left driver dying within 24 hours is just a complete facepalm moment.

I hope Audez'e will be reading this:

Fix the headband please! Make it wider so that it spreads the weight better. And most importantly, get rid of the annoying ridges on the padding. I had to sell it because those ridges were making my head painful.

The LCD3 was all that and then some.  I was considering acquiring a set as a compliment to the 800, they sounded that good, even from a Sony DAP.They are the best dynamic phones in the business along w/ the HD800.  I mean they 'were' one of the best. I slumped over and held my head in my hands when the driver died.  Right before I could hear them from a proper source chain.

RD, you'll like them.  The working ones I mean.  These were what I was expecting from the r.1s and a proper Audeze performance.

Oh btw, purrin's new set of drivers had the same old pads and semi-transparent foams as the veiled pair FYI.  Only the drivers were changed.

Probably should just get a refund and move on.

Sorry for you and audeze. Get another replacement pair, give it one last try. I think the sound is worth the risk, and it only take 4 days.

Bad things happen to the best of companies. I feel the pain Audez'e must be experiencing, because they seem to actually care and want to put out good products. While in retrospect the launch appears to be a bit in haste, without proper quality control, one must try and understand how small businesses operate. I have no idea how many employees they have, but can't be in the hundreds. Everyone most likely is wearing many hats and things sometimes slip.

This isn't my excusing repeated failures, but as a fellow small business owner I can relate. Though to a different degree, I can say I've been there and done that.

I just feel sorry for them, and equally for the affected customers.

I know Audeze gives you a 30-day window for free S&H when you buy a new LCD-2/3. But after that, you pay your own.

But what happens in this case where you send it to them for repair, on your dime and time, and THEY evaluate it and send it to you "fixed", and it brakes down again within 30-days of that. Their fault. Shouldn't they pay for shipping?

They take care of the shipping.

I have no intention of trying to get a refund because these things sound amazing when "operating to spec". This new pair I got sounded like another league compared to the ones I heard at the Irvine meet (my memory can be foggy from this) and the TP modded veiled version. I had been reconsidering getting back to STAX with the 007 this time around, but now after hearing these, I have no desire given that I already have a good dynamic rig.

I stayed up well into the early morning last night listening and immensely enjoying them. From my limited time with this LCD3 pair, they sounded clearer, more articulate, faster, and possibly provided more "plankton" (to borrow a word from that crazy Lampizator guy) than the HD800. Anax and I pull no punches when it comes to gear, and many of you know we hold the HD800 in the highest regard and have experimented with all sort of tweaks to address its shortcomings. IMO, these LCD3s are a significant, not "incremental" upgrade from the r2 "not worth the price" (which is how I felt about my previous "veiled" pair). These things will give the 'stats a run for their money, and some people may even prefer them over the 009 because they are more palpable in the bass.

The bummer of course is that one of the drivers failed. Anax was picking up his Super 7 and he was hoping to hear how they sounded out of a good rig. "The left channel is dead" I heard. Then that dreaded moment of emptiness.
