i dont think so, apparently there is a new control chip put into those Apple earphones or something that controls it... well that has to understand the new beeps send by the player to the controls
I actually have a 2 foot long volume control extension that came with a Panasonic Cassette Walkman I bought 10 or 15 years ago. It is similar to the prototype that Quaddy showerd on the previous (except 18" longer). It has a volume thumbwheel, a couple of small push buttons, +, - and it looks like a pause button.
I don't have a camera so I can't take a picture of it but they were a common feature on the cassette players back then.
yes that chip. Kinda stupid now that the price of a shuffle gone up too much... 29.99 USD anyone? for the previlege of using your own headphones???!!
The new controls is a great idea (which have been done to death every other manufacturer of previous CD player/cassett have done it already, but apple has made is smaller and concise...), if ure running etc, and want to skip tracks, just do so on the cord... It would be great if the player it self also have the controls.
So we can now look forward to ridiculously overpriced versions of normal headphones, just like when the iPhone came out and required manufacturers to make specific jacks to suit the iPhone....
I foresee people hacking the crappy headphones into a cable with a female connector on the end for use of decent headphones. (by chopping off the budds)
I do not really get what this chip thing is though.
