i just want a closed headphone that sounds decent. The white and blue headphones look stunning, and im getting worried about all this said that they are a horrible portable device. Is this really that true?

No....I would get the color you want and have somebody re-install a silver dragon, etc.,..the cable quality will determine the sound...k550 line takes 100 hrs. burn in to get the best results...mix different sounds with eq'd bass and wait 2 minutes every three songs at medium to loud volume. Sound is atrocious out of the box...after 100 hrs...sound is unbelievable. I use mine as a portable...but u cannot jog with it..

I use the regular K550 on the train and walking around. I don't think I could jog with mine though.

Sound wise I loved the K550 right out of the box and they have just gotten better with use. I may stress them with some burnin music at some point but don't feel they need it to sound good.

Now that I've got some miles on the K551, I can say that these are not as good as the K550. The K551's midrange is where the difference lies.  It sounds unnatural compared to the K550 with a nasty nasally sound.  It's really too bad the K551 is not an improvement in any way.

I am waiting to see what I think of the K167 but if I decide to keep my K550 I will now be definitely converting them a portable format versus getting the K551 then.

Interesting, because I find the K167 nasally compared to the K550. There's a real cold/flu bug going around, I wonder if it is also affecting headphones?

I think the momentums are better because they're more portable and come with a carry case.

Nah... Bought those at the same time as the k550s and ended up returning. They sounded good but not reference by any means as they had very forward heavy miss and reminded me of a Bose sound - but crisper of course. 550s were more true sounding across the spectrum albeit less portable in every way.

Any further comments on the K551?

Seems that the K551 come with the new cable/plug design that comes with the K618/619/Tiesto range and if that's so, it's indeed very good even that it's thinner than the 550's. It is still thick by portable cans standard and very flexible and sturdy.

I don't have the K550 so I'm wondering if I do fancy the shorter cable and the colour scheme I won't have much to lose (SQ wise) if I opt for the 551 instead of the 550?

Burn-in time for the 550/551 is approximately 124 hrs. to get the best out of the variomotion drivers. These are digital, not neodymium. The difference is night and day. Burn in utilizing bass heavy songs at medium volume only. Burn in every 1/2 hr. and let it rest 2 minutes. Also, try to use all genres of music, but utilize the Equalizer app through the iTunes Store. Use the bass booster portion of the app and modify the trebles to your preference without clipping.

Just quoting as I love every sentence of this post.
