NEW 2015 - HIFIMAN HE400S
Aug 19, 2015 at 7:06 AM Post #1,366 of 2,884
It is at the moment since I have to buy the 400S at $300 USD on Amazon which is ~$400 AUD and then pay for international shipping as I don't know of any australian stores that stock them yet. I can get the hd 600 for $320 AUD and pick it up, no delivery required.

My friend had only received them within the week that I auditioned them so I'd have to imagine they weren't burned in much at all.

I bought the he-400s from minidisc in Sydney a few weeks ago. I thought the price was competitive given the current us/au exchange rate.

I couldn't find any information about the stock cable which they are using and decided to ask Hifiman. They said wires are 6N OCC Silver-Coated Copper.

It is a pure, good quality material but it can be improved by using pure coppers without silver coating. Unfortunately I can't make the cable and write my opinions before February 2016 because of some school reasons.

Just finished page #35 of these thread. Still cannot find any comparison of the old He-400 with new He-400S. What do you personally prefer if you have necessary amp and there is no difference in price.
Thank you

Hmm, one of a rare times hearing that silver coating is a bad idea.

People says silver coating makes sound worse but more durable. Cyro treated teflon coated pure coppers has better sound according to some... people...

I'm generally making Silver-Gold Litz interconnects and I know what silver or gold sounds like and I can compare them easily. Copper or Silver coated Copper is too cheap for interconnect. I didn't make any copper cable or compare them. I mean if I'm wrong please warn me. I really don't want to misdirect people.

The new HE-400S is an excellent headphone, definitely worth the cost, with high comfort and good sound.

From reading this thread, apparently the HE-400 had excellent bass, with perhaps some other parts of the spectrum (of sound) not quite as polished. As a starting point headphone, I would highly recommend the new HE-400S!

Actually the original he-400 sells for $249.00 on Amazon. I own both and find the "S" version is a more enjoyable phone. I prefer the bass of the original though.

Same here, I switch the pads on the HE400 and it sounded much better more closely to the 400S treble with extra bass. The 400S still a more enjoyable headphone.

Aight, 500 bucks spent for a schiit magni/modi stack and the 400s. Everything comes in Monday. Pretty excited. Anything else I'll need? Cables or whatever?

You'll need RCA interconnects and USB A to B cable. I'm using Gold+Silver+Copper for interconnect but I would reccomend Gold+Silver for this setup. I'm considering changing it. Gold+Silver cables highlights the clarity of mids and treble.

Or if you want to improve bass, you can buy pure copper RCA's. They are cheaper and good for bass.

They wrote about the plug they are using but they didn't mention the material of the cable. Neutrik Ryan has good plugs but like I said they didn't mention about the cable. But I don't think you can find a better one for this price. In USA craftwork is too expensive.

I initially used Schiit Pyst cables for my Asgard 1. Found the sound to be thin. I had Analysis Plus Oval build me short silver cables. Same cable they use on their iPod cable. Better sounding, much more airy.
