Hi guys,

I've recently became quite interested in headphones. Part of the reason is becoz my wife often share the same study room to watch her TV etc. Therefore, @ times her tv sound quite loud n distracting to me.

I'm basically aiming to be either the AD700 or HD595. The Headphone will be used together with my PC, which i used mainly for movie & music with light gaming. N i will be using it to hook onto my PS3. So it either needs to have RCA input or Digital input.

Can some pros here recommend me a USB DAC to accommodate my hp? Creative has 1, is it good enuff?
Or do i need some like Zero DAC? Do i need Amp to work it my HP?

Do give ur pointers.

No need to start a new thread. There is a thread specifically for people looking for advice like this: http://www.head-fi.org/forum/thread/529144/buying-headphones-seeking-guidance-don-t-start-a-new-thread-ask-for-advice-here

Hmmm...let me see if im clear, are you looking for advice on which Dac to get or you want advice on both things (headphones too?)?

A couple things to consider:

Are you looking for headphones because you are interested in the quality of sound they can provide or are you interested in headphones for their isolation (from the wife)? If it is the latter, you may want to consider IEMs as they will always do a better job of isolating than any almost all headphones. If it is the quality of sound, what kind of music would you be listening to?

Secondly, as for the DAC, I would avoid pushing into that area without knowledge of what you are looking for. The answer for you (if you are just trying to hear what you are engaging in) may be to buy a USB gaming headset. You can plug this in to either your computer or PS3 and are often very cheap.

Hi all,

Basically, I have a TripleFi 10 but I find it quite a hassle to put on n take off everytime. Therefore I decide to source for a headphone.

I'm intending to run it on my Asus essence stx.

Can u recommend me which hp is good?

Below are my choices:

1. AD700
2. HD595
3. DT880 / DT990
4. K702

Among the 4 headphones, which is the best buy for value? Was thinking abt buying the DT880 or DT990. What is the diff btw the DT880 and DT990? Since they are both selling @ the same price @ Amazon.  How is the AD900?

DT990 have tight well controlled punchy not bloated bass great very detailed mids and highs but be aware that highs are very bright. The main difference between DT990 and DT880 is that while brightness is gone on DT880 but details are noticeable less too.
Be aware that according to all posts on this forum K702 need at least 300 hours of burnin time plus they need dedicated amplifier to sound right and modern receivers, Denon 2310 for example, will not do the job unfortunately

Take the K702 off your list, trust me.

As for the others, the DT880/990 are double the price of the AD700 and HD555's (yes I said the 555's, I'll touch on that in a second). So for the same price you could get the AD900 instead of the Ad700, which are quite an improvement imo. The AD900 take the already amazing clarity and soundstage offered in the AD700s and improve upon them while adding more to the low end, which is still somewhat lacking. I currently own these and am quite happy with the comfort and sound quality in these. The best thing though is that the AD900 do not need an amp to be enjoyed. As for the Sennheisers, if you are going to go the 595 route, buy the 555's instead and mod them to be 595s. There's guides for it all around and it's easy from what everyone says. The 555/95's offer more bass than the ADx00, but not the clarity and soundstage. The next step up would be the HD650, which are too expensive and need an amp so don't bother with them. Now when considering the DT880/990 you have to also factor in an amp, if I recall correctly. From what I understand the 600ohm of the 880 is the way to go, and the 250ohm version of the 990 is the way to go, both of which would need an amp to get them up to potential. This adds another $100 or so, at least.

DT880/990=~$400
AD900=~$280
HD555=~$90.

That's all I have to add I suppose.

If you want to block out the noise of the TV, I suggest getting closed headphones.

1. AD700
2. HD595
3. DT880 / DT990

So the closed version of that list would be:

1. ATH A700 / ATH A900
2. HD 25
3. DT 770

There's also the ATH-M50, Shure SRH840, and Shure 750DJ.

There's the Pro and then the Premium. IIRC the 80hm and 32ohm versions are terrible, fart cannons, while the 250ohm isn't supposed to be that bad. I could be wrong as I've given up to be honest and just avoid the DT770 line.

That thread sorts it out and you'll understand why I called it a mess. The ones I happened to try at a store were the DT770 Pro 80, which are fartcannons. The pair was used and they offered it to me for $75, I declined. The bass and whole sound was terrible, honestly now that I've heard the Beats it wasn't too far off from that.

There's the 32/250/600 ohm line, which all kind of sound the same - these are the 2005 revisions. Then there's the Pro 80ohm model, which is totally different, bassier.
The 770 isn't so bad as the 880, which you can get into the 2003 version, then vintage, Regular and Pro, etc...
